In the video, about 17 seconds in, you can hear the transmission start to whine. It only whines in 3rd gear and only after the car has been driven and the transmission warmed up. What I realized is that the oil was likely too low as I filled it to the 3.5 quarts the manual calls for but then drained some out because I thought I had over filled it.

Being naive and thinking the transmission was shot I pulled it from the car before winter and didn't even bother to check the oil. Went out and got another transmission that has rear diff damage and was going to tear it apart and use it. However, I like the gear ratios much more of the one I had and now I am wondering if any experts have any advice before I put the old one back in the car (with more oil) whether I caused any permanent damage from the short (250km) period I drove it for? Transmission did have 250,000 kilometres on it when pulled from the donor as well.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Ian

That really doesn't sound that bad at all. It is most likely fine.

My transmission was ruined by running low with oil after only 100 miles or so... If the trans has 250k kilometers on it AND it was already whining, I wouldn't put it back in.

I've stressed in numerous threads, PUT IN ALL OF THE OIL.

Yea that's what I am worried about. How did your transmission whine compare to mine I posted in the video? I honestly can't believe that a transmission would be toast after so little KM's. But if yours was wrecked then mine is likely as well

Yours sounds worse than mine was. Mine only made noise at neutral to very light throttle input. The end results on mine was it wouldn't shift into reverse.

That sounds like the reverse lockout mechanism wasn't getting any oil.
That would happen if oil was low. The fifth gear splashes oil on that mechanism.
But this problem would not be fatal.

I think I am going to give my transmission a shot. "scotties cocktail" is a famous subaru gear oil concoction that is known to help with whine and make the transmission buttery smooth, so I am going to try this mixture and hope that I didn't fry a bearing or anything

Ironhydroxide posted his recommendation for oil, post #27 on

I personally run either amsoil severe gear 75w90 and Lucas synthetic oil stabilizer in my transmissions. (Or if I'm feeling"cheap" Lucas 80w-90 and synthetic oil stabilizer (3:1 ratio for both)

I find the stabilizer takes almost any gear oil and makes it cling to the gears and shafts better. Good for both dry starts where the trans has had time to sit unmoving, dripping the upper bearings dry, and for preventing gear root pitting.

I ran my 818R hard- I used Swepco 201 without any worries or issues. We have been using that in our racing Porsche for years.

Just an update on the transmission issues for anyone else that may have had whine. I drained the oil and ran a magnet through the basin as well as filtered it through a cloth to collect any other debris and this is what I had found... A lot less metal shavings than I expected so I decided to throw some Redline 75W-90 and Redline Shock proof (heavy weight) back into the transmission to give it another chance.

I will update what happens once the car is running again
