Aw my VF39 is cracked.

Now what? Any suggestions? I assume I shouldn't run this anymore.

Thinking maybe a VF48 or another 39? I guess this gives me an excuse to get retuned and do my AWIC and intake changes, I guess. Car is a 95% track use 818R, 257/205 hybrid build with forged internals.

Com'on, that'll buff right out ;)

Aside from that this is a mostly track car, what other criteria do you have and what do you want to get out of it?

-budget
-drivable power & torque or a big peak (that answers itself since you're tracking)
-interested in going dual scroll or external waste-gate
-'stock location' or a rotated turbo, or something really different, like scargo is doing

Good questions, and I think I can answer them with a "lifestyle" preference. I want the car back on track within 5 weeks or so. Which means I would ideally like another IHI VF turbo since they're about right in terms of power delivery and overall power, and bolt right up to my exhaust. Budget is IHI VF range haha. Used I think!

Good answer!

Since you've already installed a 39, you modded the shock tower brace for clearance(?). If so, you have enough room so it isn't a limiting factor?

I'd look for another 39 on the cheap (got mine for a song) and run the hell out of it until you've completed your shake-down. You could also look for a VF 43, which apparently is a 39 that is ported and 'doesn't crack' (NASIOC quote)

I really like the Dom 1.5 XTR. Stock location. Might have to clearance the rear brace a small amount for it though, but not 100% certain. Great power band and 400WHP capable.

why don't you just weld it up and run an EWG?

Hm. I wouldn't mind having another 39 (or a 43). I'd like an IHI still because of the ease of bolting it in.

I'm not a very good welder :/ It's not out of the realm of possibility, though. I was thinking about clocking whatever I do (be it this one "fixed") or a new one so then I can try to fit my AWIC. A lot like Craig's install:

I've always been fond of the VF34 but ended up going with the 18G. The VF34 would've been way more bolt-in though.

Almost all VF39s crack at that spot around the wastegate. It however doesn't seem to have any significant effect on the performance of the turbos. There are many that have run VF39s with cracks equal or worse than that for tens of thousands of miles with no ill effects.

That being said, if you are looking for an excuse for a new turbo, the Dom 1.5x is a great turbo on a stock engine. I am a sucker for BW turbos myself. And an EFR 6258 or 6758 would be a great fit as well.

So. I think I'm going to make a bracket to hold the IWG shut. Then run an EWG. I assume I can weld a bung to the uppipe and use the existing one, instead of buying a new uppipe?

Also, 38mm vs 44mm? I believe I'm okay with 38 at these boost levels. Any thoughts?

I have a used turbo I'll be happy to sell you!
Tomei Arms M7760 Turbo Subaru Models, 20g, IWG. $500. New they are $1,350.
No discernible shaft play. Ran well when removed.
Lots of info on this turbo at RallySportDirect. Mine's a little older, it doesn't come with the billet actuator the new ones do.

That crack is standard issue on the 39s. I wouldn't give that a second thought TBH.
