View Full Version : wastegate actuator arm interference

Has anyone had problems with the wastegate actuator arm interfering with the rear cross brace? My rear cross brace is right behind the actuator arm and will stop it from opening. I have stock motor mounts and stock trans mount. The engine and trans seem to be tilted forward with the rear of the trans higher than the front, which I believe is common. It looks like if I could lower the rear of the trans it might drop the actuator arm below the cross brace. Another option would be to cut out a section of the cross brace and re-weld it.
Has anyone else had to overcome this?

Hey Skip
The stock TD04 has a shorter shaft. See my picture.

Some have cut out sections of the shock tower brace. Then added metal to regain strength.
I would look for 3/4" to 1" of clearance for engine movement.

Yes, and the problem is worse with a heat shield. http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?16780-JJ-s-818s-Build&p=219523&viewfull=1#post219523

If you are 'adventurous' you can try modifying the waste gate pivot shaft. I did on my build and gained ~1/2", which was just enough to clear the cross brace with no additional modification, BUT I'm using very stiff engine & transmission mounts. If not for that I'd have interference issues still.

I got rid of the stock shock tower brace and replaced it with a single straight piece of square tubing. My setup is going to be quite different than stock.

Thanks. Looks like most people tackle it at the brace and not trying to adjust the angle of the engine. I'll look at what I can do to the brace to get clearance.

I have same issue with and JDM EJ207v7 engine, I will modify my brace, most likely weld a bar on top of the existing bar and then cut a section of the lower (existing) bar out

I cut out the square cross tube and moved it up about an inch. Lots of clearance for the wastegate arm now. I also had to bend the intercooler mount arms up a little as the intercooler was hitting the relocated cross bar. I hope that doesn't cause problems with the body work down the road.

You may end up needing to "massage" the body work if you moved the intercooler up. I actually had to bend my intercooler brackets down ever so slightly to get the intercooler to clear the engine cover.
I would have suggested trying to tilt the engine. I didn't have to clearance for the wastegate arm at all, but maybe I got lucky on the engine angle the first time.
