View Full Version : Axle Snap Rings

Took my axles off tonight to put on the CV boot straps. I assembled them a long time ago (2 years?) but skipped the straps since I didn't have them at the time. I also greased them at this point. Passenger side seemed fine. I couldn't get the outside joint apart so just packed grease in slowly while rotating and repeating. Driver side the inboard hub came off the axle while removing it. I looked inside and found the snap ring that requires pliers, but also found a plain round wire ring. I couldn't assemble it anyway with the round wire ring and the instructions don't say to add it, just the single tool style ring on the outside of the tri lobe. Is this correct? The subaru diagram seems to support this as it shows only the #4 tool style clip:

I took apart the outside joint to verify the round wire clip that is supposed to be on that end is there and it was so I don't know where the other clip came from. However, when putting it back together the clip ended up getting mangled. I tried using the extra clip I found and that got mangled as well. I can't find this clip on the parts diagram anywhere. anyone know where I can find a replacement?

Another one of those 30 min jobs taking 3 hours and now I have an axle in pieces at that.

Hmm, the only wire clip looking thing that I know of is #7 in that pic. It goes on after the rollers are inside the stub axle. It keeps the rollers from coming out. #4 keeps the triangle roller holders on the axle.

On the inside tripod joint, there should only be a snap ring. If there was a circlip in there, I'm guessing someone screwed up and lost the snap ring and tried using a circlip.

opposed forces wasn't loading so I don't have the diagrams.

for the new style axles...

on the inside there's a roundishtriangularish snap ring the prevents the trilobe rollers from pulling out of the cup... especially when you pull on the axle so the stress is not on the boot. is that what you are talking about? It sits in a grove on the outside of the cup.
then there's a external circlip that retains the trilobe carrier on the axle.

for the outside put the axle in a vise and hit the bearing carrier right near the center. your method should be fine for greasing.

in that picture you can see the circlip and the groves where the snap ring sits in the cup.

This must have been an extra. Not sure how I dropped it in there.

Does anyone know where to get replacements for the circlip that goes on the outside cv?

This is the style of clip I now need. it's the one where you have to pound the CV back together.

Hmm..could be. That's the front axle one, I need to confirm the rear is the same. All the diagrams on opposed forces show the ball joint and axle as one assembly. That one shows it separate....which makes me feel better.

that's probably your best bet, no diagrams show that clip on the outside rear, its all shown as one unit.

UGH I tossed all my "extra" wrong spline axles...

IIRC, that wire ring is supposed to be there. Seems like there was the wire looking ring at one end of the joint, and then the square shaped ring at the other end. You have to compress one of the rings, and move the tri-lobe down over it to expose the other ring. The two rings locate the tri-lobe on the shaft.

It's been quite a while, but it seems like that's how it goes.

I got an extra pair off the front axles if you need them. Not sure if they are the same, but I don't mind measuring them if you need me to.

The two rings locate the tri-lobe on the shaft.

I don't think this is the case, the trilobe gets pressed all the way to a ridge on the axle, then the circlip holds it in place, the trilobe also has bevel so it only fits on the axle one way, upside down and the circlip doesn't fit.

I'll measure mine this evening.

The rear circlips stuck inside my diff housing, but they appear to be the same. Circlip ID 1.023", axle groove .963"
