Ok, I completely drained out the old oil in my 2004 wrx 5 speed transmission donor.

A year and so later, I put oil in the transmission, I stopped at 2 quarts, then checked the level of oil on the dipstick.

They say to put 3.7 quarts but with only 2 quarts, I am over the F mark on the dipstick.

I am fairly certain I removed all the oil, and since the oil on the dipstick is fairly clear, I'd say I drained it all out.

I included pictures so you can see what I am saying.

Should I put 3.7 quarts and not care what the dipstick on the transmission shows, or should I go by the dipstick, and assume the transmission should only take two quarts.

What do you say?

3.7 quarts

I believe any early builder made the mistake of relying on the dipstick and burned up a transmission.

The transmission sits rear high in the car.
Put the front wheels on some ramps (about 8") so the transmission is level. Then check it again.

The rear housing will hold about a quart. But it doesn't fill up until the first time you go up a steep hill.

In the Saker racing cars here in NL we put minimum 4.5 liters in the TM as refilling quantity If the system is completely drained then its over 5 liters because all the Tranmissions are equipped wit oil cooler! Please keep in mind that the position in the standaard car is a bit lower at the rearend of the TM! I advice you to check the longitual angle of the TM You must keep the level at the front diff high because all of the power now goes over only one Diff to the wheels instead of two in the original car! Thats one of the reasons why we spray the oil coming out from the oil cooler with an yetpipe on the crown and pinion! If we don't do this we face a toothwelding of the crown and pinion! also the factory improved the oling of the crown wheel by the installation of a newly develloped oil guide The 4.111 finalratio has the best resistance against toothwelding is our experiance!

So on a similar note, what are the risks of "overfilling" the trans?

I put in 4 quarts and didn't think twice about it. I figured more is better for something like the trans where it's simply one case with fluid in it.

Leaking from the CV joint seals on the sides of the tranny (annoying) or leaking out the front seal and contaminating your Clutch! (More than annoying)!
