View Full Version : Tie rod end thread length

Recently I read where someone (I think Tamra), measured the threads of an unmounted tie rod end. I can't find the thread, nor remember the spec. What depth of thread should be showing mounted? Could a nut be welded to the end to increase depth of female threads?

When I was building my 818 front suspension this was something I was second guessing. Are extenders the norm or are most just using the stock tie rod ends?

I've made a handful of extenders for people with offset racks as the thread engagement was minimal.

What is an extender and how do I get it?

It was just a piece that has matching male threads on one side and female on the other. It threads into the steering rack and gives an extra 1" to the outside length so that you have another inch of thread engagement.

If there's enough people interested I can have it quoted. For now I've only made a handful with some material I had on hand, but that's gone.

Here is what they look like installed, I added the roll pin.

I'd be interested. That's an easy way to take one more question mark off the list.

So the extender is fixed to the rack end not the tie rod, correct? Also, I am left with about 3/8 inch of threads in my right side tie rod end. Is that sufficient?

It goes between the rack and the inner tie rod, not between the inner and outer tie rods.

Why not just cut some threads off, get a female-female union two lock nuts and threaded rod cut to proper length?

Never mind, not enough space...

If there's enough people interested I can have it quoted.

So, that makes at least 2 of us. I was asking about this a few weeks back, so I hope metros and I are not the only ones interested. Maybe tmoretta makes three?

What serial #s are we talking about here? We (Bob #22, 23, Craig # 13?, myself #17) identified the rack offset issue to FFR 2 years ago... I thought that the rack mounts were moved ages ago. I wasn't satisfied with lose 1/2 inch of rack travel in one direction and give it to the other side... :( see my post, discussion starts at post # 398 http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?10649-RM1Sepex-Build-Thread/page10

Dan is right, I think they fixed it. My rack was quite centered (chassis #150).

After a small two year detour, I am back to putting my kit together. Unfortunately it looks like my chassis has the same problem. Count me in if you can have some more of these made.
