View Full Version : Help! Shifter Cable Snapped
Buzz Skyline

My shifter cable just snapped. Does anyone have the specs and source for replacements? I plan to contact FFR too, but sometimes other suppliers are cheaper and quicker.
I need it ASAP because I hope to go autocrossing on Sunday.
I will be switching to an MR2 shifter when I have the chance. So if anyone has a good source for the shifter and the correct cables, I might consider the upgrade now if I can get the pieces quick.
Thanks,
Buzz

What length cables did you use? McMaster-Carr has them in 3', 4', 6' and 15'

Buzz,
Any details on how/where it snapped? Hope your weren't on the Beltway!

I was still in my neighborhood, fortunately. Had to get out and put it in gear from the back and drive home in second.
I won't know where it snapped until I pull the cable out, but the sharpest bend is just ahead of the shifter assembly, so that's my guess at the moment. I'll let you know as soon as I do.

Anyone know who made this and if they are selling them? WHat are the cable lengths for the MR2 shifter?

Check out the rest of the MR2 thread, there are many unique solutions to the shift linkage.

This is the second cable to break. Pearldrummer had one snap too.
That was a handmade setup. Forgot who did it. They cut it out on a bandsaw.
Here is the version I made. I had it quoted at a shop, but all of the parts added up to over $300 my cost. I'm going to make some changes to it and have it requoted. I used 7' cables, but my setup is very different.
My parents are in town this week and my dad is helping me wire up my own CNC at home. Then I can at least see if I can download files to it, or if I have to make my own controller and make parts more inexepensively.

Mine's pretty simple too, bandsaw and drill press job
the bracket is a chopped up FFR bracket and a piece of 2 x 2 x 1/8 aluminum angle. The bell crank is 1/2 aluminum with a 1/4 x 3/8 bronze oilite bushing. The shift arm is reversed to shorten it so it doesn't hit the rear vent screen

THanks, ours shifter is a bit different, cable "pull" is first and second, so we have to flip the boomerange over. I could make our own, but don't want to reinvent the wheel here. Great ideas and fabrication, it all looks mighty awesome. Whatever we do, it has to be bullet proof, during a 25 hour race, we will use the shifter at least 11,000 times.

Buzz, I used 82" cables (part number 100-04222-0082 from custom control cables). The length somewhat depends on your routing so I'd suggest installing your shifter and linkage first and then using some wire to find the length you need and add 2-3". This is my setup (MR2 shifter is extended by 3", linkage is Matteo's design with tweaks):

Yup, mechie is right. I had one break too. FFR sent me a new one for free upon me asking. Also a lovely forum member sent me his old ones.
Just makes me want to upgrade it, though. I'd like to see pics of how your's broke

I kept my set up is not a trick as others, I just used the MR2 shifter assembly and some simple mods to the rear linkage. I am really pleased with how good it feels.
The cables I am using are 7.5' and 6.8'

Buzz, did you get cables from STiPWRD? If not, I have an untouched pair of FFR cables since I went K-Tuned. I'm not as close as STiPWRD but could overnight them.

Thanks a lot, Pete.
It turns out that I will have an MR2 shifter here Thursday. I'm very short on free time these days, so I may not have time to install it anyway, but I think putting the new shifter in wouldn't be much more involved than replacing a cable, so might as well do it right.
Thanks again. This forum and the people on it are great resources.
Best, Buzz

either 7 or 8 feet, I don't remember, its a few pages back in my build thread. You want the teleflex extreme cables for the least slop.

Which length of K-tuned did you get? We have a Ktuned race shifter, would love to keep the same manufacturer. We are running the cables straight back and over the engine, under the manifold.

I found the break in the cable. It is at the transmission end of the cable that controls for and aft motion of the gear selector. That's not where I expected a break.

It really didn't break, The cable just pulled out of the crimp.
I would call that a manufacturer defect.
A typical pull capacity of that size cable is 230 Lbs.

Ahhh, good to know. I think I'm going with the MR2 shifter anyway. It likely ends all my autocross fun for the year though.

Hey Buzz,
don't let a cable stop you from autocrossing. I'll lend you one of My FFR cables until you get the MR2 shifter working.
This is the cable I used on my MR2 shifter.
I used both 7'. wih my side shifter. You may need a little longer.

Buzz, that's exactly where mine broke. Was yours at a particularly sharp angle or something?

It was at angle I considered steep, but was put together according to the manual. I'm going to take the downtime to craft something to reduce the angle.

I've searched around, but haven't found any venders selling modified linkage to replace the transmission bracket FFR supplies with the kit. I know Mechie estimated his set up would cost $300, but I personally would spend a fair amount for the parts. It seems to me to be a more important upgrade than a pretty billet shifter.
A lot of the designs look fairly easy to fabricate with a drill press and band saw (like Dan's nice solution above), but I'm too limited on time to build and debug one, at least for the next several months. Any entrepreneurs in the process of making a kit to sell?

Hi my shifter took 15 days to build and post the video, with a hand in a cast and working everyday10-12 hours,All the part numbers are on the MR2 shifter thread. From what I see everyone is different. Cables ends,shifter-height, length of cables. And total design, so I took what I though was the best ideas at the time and started building.
Any body that is building these cars knows things don't happen overnight, building takes time. Well at least for me, so do what makes you happy!
