View Full Version : Need help with brake on my Mk4

I desperately need some help with choice of front brakes on my MKIV.

My original order was for a non-complete kit but I did not have a donor vehicle either and my car is having all new parts. It's a 3V 4.6L motor and Tremec 3650 Tranny with 8 1/2 rear end and 3.55 gears.

The rear end brakes have the 5 lug conversion and Ford Racing M-2300-M Cobra brakes so I am all good there.44422

The issue is with the front brakes because I have spindles from an 87-93 Mustang like the ones shown here 44419 and also these have the 5 lug conversion hubs too 44421

The assembly manual states there are limited wheel brake packages available as I have found to my cost. I also have the 18" Halibrand wheels as shown here 44420

I have made bad choices in buying Calipers and rotors previously so any assistance in which ones to choose would be much appreciated/. I am unsure as to whether to bite the bullet and order the factory ones and I'm hoping your expertise can help me with the right choice.

Thanks in advance.

Greg

Actually what you are showing in the photos are 1994/1995 Mustang SN95 spindles, not '87-'93. With these spindles you can use single piston calipers from a 1994 thru 1998 Mustang or with a bit of grinding for clearance you can step up to the two piston PBR calipers that were used on 1999 thru 2004 Mustangs.

Hi Greg,

You said all the components you are using are new. It would make sense now that you know the situation to see about returning or sell the spindles you have outright and go with FFR spindles like on the MKIV. That will give you so many advantages such as excellent steering geometry without SAI mod. The number of modern brake kits would be much more efficient as well. I have the 2000 GT spindles so I can choose from three kits: Brembo 4 pot, Baer 4 pot, and Wilwood 6 pot front kits (bolt on Mustang aftermarket kits). The FFR spindles are the best choice if you are going new. It will hurt at first (sticker shock) but it goes away. If I ever change mine that will be the way I will go.

If you read some of the suspension/steering/brake threads you will see the compromises that you make using the older components.

Good hunting,

WEK.

As Jeff said, you have the SN95 spindles, not the Fox body spindles. Your brake rotors are separate of the hubs, correct. Looking at the picture it seems you are using two lug nuts to hold the rotor in place, and the spindle has a large locknut on it, not a castle nut and cotter key.

Not to nit pick....but you also have 17 inch wheels. Unless you got a 17 inch tire on an 18 inch wheel.

Slight hijack. What parts are needed to mate the Cobra front caliper & 13" rotor to FFR's complete kit front spindle?
