I got a lot of flack for my lack of front camber (I think I have 0.6*, per the manual) at an autox this weekend. I was thinking about the logistics of trailering all the way to the shop where I got it done, and stumbled across these:

Has anyone used them? What do you guys do for alignments? And DIY'ers out there?

To get alignment close I use.

I use the digital level for caster and camber.
I use the laser for toe.
I am at -2.5* camber.

BTW: Pep Boys does free alignment checks.

I've never tried those, but I do all my own alignments. I just park the vehicle on four pairs of vinyl floor tiles with some bearing grease smeared between them, then get out some string, four jackstands, a measuring tape, level, wrenches and a notepad. It takes me a few hours to do most cars (my Evo viii, STI, etc.) The A-arms on the 818s are a bit more involved than McPherson struts though.

I learned how to do it from some webpage or other, but it's not too hard to figure out. I'll see if I can find the link.

I made my own and added some angle iron pieces that extend up high enough that I can measure toe in at the same time.

I was literally about to buy one of these quicktrick kits for $200. Says it does camber, caster, and toe... any thoughts?

Bob, I like your solution. Bob or Buzz- Any idea about reading material on how to do this yourself "the old fashioned way" with a level?

The quick trick looks a little chinsy, STiPWRD. But, the idea is cool. I'm sure other parts of the site (GTM, Cobra) do this themselves and can provide insight somewhere.

Bill, any pictures?

I have very little camber (0.6-7* front) and was thinking of "upgrading" the camber. However my alignment shop is 4+ hours. And that's a long haul each way with a trailer.

Send me an e-mail and I will send you some pictures. I also made a tool for setting the caster that doesn’t require turning the wheels side to side.

Jack stands, string, scales, squish plates (As Buzz describes but mine are aluminum) and the tools Bob mentions. I do have a camber caster gauge as well but use what Bob tools for rough in or quick check.

I use Longacre digital caster/camber gauge with spindle mount, also a longacre turn pads. Have Longacre bump steer measurement tool also along with toe plates. All get me closer than taking it to an alignment shop.

I use these from FlyinMiata modified with extra rulers to do thrust angle and center the steering wheel. They double as turn plates and I do the alignment on the scales and corner weight the car at the same time all without the wheels in the way.

Hubstands are great. A little pricey though. They are reasonable when you have more than one race car. They can cut the plates with the lug layout for both cars. It's best if you go in on them with Buddies.
