I was originally going to get the Sparco unit but after reading a few articles about how splined quick releases sometimes jam/take a beating I changed my mind and went with the NRG.. (Not Real Good?)

The unit is a Chinese knockoff of the original Japanese Works Bell unit that sells for about $350, I went for the ver 2.8 as it was marketed as easy to use with gloves, and I didn't like the fake paddle shifter look of the 3.0

I ended up getting the short hub and 2.8 release for about $180, A WB setup would have been $525 A Sparco setup was $415 so basically I got my Sparco 353 steering wheel for free.

The adage you get what you pay for comes to mind, and usually I don't buy knockoff parts but I made an exception, so lets see if it bites me.

The build quality looks pretty good, splines on the hub fit the column with no issue, the hardware fit fine and is a decent quality.

Anyway included with the quick release is a split aluminum ring, that fits inside the steering wheel side of the quick release but seems to serve no function.

it makes a cameo here at 3:20

for now I left it out unless someone can give me a good reason to install, I have to take the wheel off again anyway to remove the (unnecessary) lockout mechanism

overall I am happy with the kit, we will see how it holds up but I am liking how easy it is to put the wheel back on with the proper orientation.

That's what I got too, both parts. Am happy with them (no driving yet). I did not get that weird alu ring, though, might be something new but how good is it if you can't find a purpose for it. :)

We will be looking at a smaller steering wheel and a quick release here soon. Does the short hub interfere with the blinkers at all? Would you recommend the short hub over the long hub?

Short hub doesn't interfere with blinkers, actually it's the right choice cuz the short hub+quick release make up almost the exact length of the OEM s/w.

If you care about self-cancelling blinkers and a horn, you do have to mod a few things in there to make them work (short of long hub it's the same). I think AZPete has started a thread on that over a year ago and I do have pix and stuff on my build thread from a year ago.

agreed, without the quick release though I think you'd be hitting the stalks quite often.

A great alternative are these. I have two of the "Race Versions". One I have been using for 10+ years with no problems. You can usually find them cheaper at other web stores.
