View Full Version : Shift Arm placement in rear of trans

I ended up needing to remove another portion of the rear of the trans during the 2wd conversion to get the race out of the tail end. I've done the necessary work and am trying to reinstall everything. Before removing I could pull/push the shift arm that sticks out of the rear of the trans and feel it clicking into different gears. However, when I removed the tail end of the trans I wasn't able to see what location it was in before it was out of place.
Where exactly does the end of this shift arm slot in before putting the trans back together?

Just found this thread: http://www.scoobymods.com/showthread.php/mod-transfer-case-removal-5th-6049.html
This shows all 3 of the gear selectors lined up. Do I need to just pull the 1/2 gear selector back so that it's in neutral?

Crisis diverted. I was underestimating the amount of force it would take to move the 1-2 selector back into neutral. Got a little leverage and it went into place easily. Re-assembled everything and happy with the final product now.

Ha, no chance for the rest of us to even help!
Note for others, the fork sits tidy into the pockets on the lower two, and rotates to hit each of the three, and pull/push.
For assembling things, it may help to slide the center one in or out a click, to capture the fork while fishing with the rest of the assembly.
That's a cool look at the innards of the shift pivot. What purpose does the upper paddle arm serve?

The upper paddle goes to the reverse lock out mechanism.
The mechanism does 2 things.
1. It springs you shift handle to the middle so it doesn't flop around in neutral.
2. It prevent you from going from fifth to reverse. You have to take the handle to the center neutral position before going to reverse.
The little tab on the 5th gear shifting fork operates you reverse lights.
The notch in you shift arm tells the ECU that you are in neutral.
According to Dom at TIC, you need that neutral switch or it limits your Power.

Thanks for the breakdown.
It makes me wonder if you could take your side mount shifter one step further and interact with the forks directly so that you didn't have to support the rear of the pivot shaft. Of course this assumes that the other items you mention are taken care of in some way.

Good idea if you don't mind gear lube going everywhere...:p
Bob, What would happen if I installed two neutral switches?

I thought about making my own shifter arm and rear housing. Just couldn't justify the time with my other 4 projects going on.
I only need to gain about 4-6" to fit my rear radiator/fan. So no need for the extra work.
The ECU only has one neutral switch input. So I see no advantage to having 2 switches.
