View Full Version : Brake Lines with Wilwood Kit

I'm planning on running the hard brake/clutch lines this weekend. I'm using the Wilwood 4 pot F/R calipers and remember reading that these required longer brake lines on the 818. I haven't been able to find anything mentioning this now though.
For those of you running the Wilwood kit - regular length stainless brake lines?
Where have you guys been purchasing the stainless brake lines with appropriate fittings to match the Wilwood calipers? *Edit* May have answered my own question. Found that Wilwood sells an adapter (part # 220-0628) with the correct male threads (1/8-27 NPT) and 3/16 female threads. Just need to know the length question.

I ran my brake lines the way the manual says to and I have Wilwood brakes. I didn't use the provided lines - I bought a coil of NiCopp line. It took about 40 feet for the brakes and the clutch.
I used 1/8 NPT to AN-3 fittings in the calipers - purchased at Summit Racing. I could have used all the provided fittings, but I used 10x1mm flare nuts designed for 3/16 tubing that I bought at Advanced Auto Parts instead of the adapters.

I documented what I did on my thread, can't recall all the numbers and conversions from top of my head. All I know is that the longer SS flexlines I bought (16" I think) where too short and I had to extend the bracket to make them fit. Followed someone else who did the same thing but for some reason his lengths did work, but not me. Just make sure you get correct length SS flexlines.

I've got a roll and half of the same NiCopp line, hopefully that'll be enough for a first timer.
What about the lines between hardline and caliper?

-3 AN female ended brake line. Around 18 inches, depending on exactly where you end the hard line.
I used these at the end of the line:

-3 AN to 3/8-24 inverted flare.

Yup, Jaime's got it, those are the ones.

I did this with my clutch to make the engine easier to remove:

24 inch -3 AN to 10mm banjo brake line.

Used Wilwood sourced flex lines in the front. They're 'supposed' to be the correct length for the 818 (after talking to vendor), but they are a touch short.

Think I've wrapped my head around what I need in terms of adapters and lines.
One more question though. Jamie - that fitting you posted, is that the adapter that bolts to the chassis with the ffr provided tabs? Basically the fitting that joins hard and flex lines?

Yes it is. The FFR tabs were a little thin for my tastes - the fittings didn't fit snugly. I bought some thicker ones on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006K8RJX2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)...

You might want to pick up some new clips too, depending on how the donor ones look. Here's kit of tabs and clips (http://www.amazon.com/JEGS-Performance-Products-63091-Brake/dp/B007VREGVY/ref=sr_1_2?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1416412091&sr=1-2&keywords=brake+line+adapter+clip).

Jason, I used SS brake lines off of ebay and they had plenty of slack for suspension travel. All 4 brake lines were the same length.

These lines should work with the wilwood calipers as long as they use this sort of fitting:

The bag of remaining metric fittings came from Fed Hill:

These connect the hard NiCopp lines to the flex lines and to the master brake/clutch cylinders. Cut off the SAE fittings from the supplied FFR brake lines and use those to connect to the proportioning valve and T splitter.

About the c clips (which are sort of squared-U clips), the FFR clips were not holding on the FFR brackets and I had to slightly make them thicker to fit snug on the adapters/brackets.
Other thing I found out, for the front calipers I am pretty sure it's better to have 90-deg fittings or flexlines' ends. This would route the flexline straight up on the spindle instead of having straight lines and fittings for which you have to bend sharply right of the caliper. Puts more stress. I said I'd leave them like that but I am unhappy with the result.

Thanks for all the replies and help everybody.
Jamie - Ordered a set of those tabs as well. Thanks for the links.
Slava - The wilwood calipers use 1/8-27 NPT threads instead of a typical banjo fitting. I've sourced a set of 18" brake lines from summit and the necessary adapters to make everything work together.
Frank - Summit didn't sell 90* angled fittings. I'm going to stick with straight fittings for now and see what they look like. The only alternative was 45* fittings that were $15/each, which is ridiculous.
Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to tackle the entire brake line system. Shipping companies need to be on their game as all the parts should arrive on Friday. Hoping Michael Everson's clutch kit and remote reservoir kit arrives then too.
Again - Thanks all!

I bought the Wilwood lines.... then realized they would not work like you. Brando and I have the info you need in our threads somewhere. But it looks like you have it figured out.

Ridiculous price.
90-deg flexline's ends could do it too. (fittings on the end of the lines)
