View Full Version : Coolant lines vs. aluminum panels on the "newer" R's

Due to the nice aluminum panel that occupies the entire side of the more recent build date R's, there's no hole for a coolant line to pass through near the dead pedals.

The only solution that comes to mind is making a hole (perhaps with a rubber gasket) for the coolant line to pass through. Can we just wrap the hose around the 90* turn at the front of the cockpit instead of passing it through the cockpit? Anyone have any better ideas?

You cant go in front, it will interfere with the bodywork.

did you not get dead pedals?

I did get dead pedals, but there's no gap in my siding (as seen in the photo above) for the hoses to go through.

I would use the dead pedal as a template and cut them in the standard locations.

a fine jigsaw should be able to make that cut without missing it up too bad.

You should be able to go around the outside if you stay high so the tire doesn't hit it.

The side panels were left without the opening in case you want to run the coolant hoses both up the passenger side to offset the drivers weight (we did this in the newer R we built). You will need to either cut a large opening in the passenger side or small single openings on both sides depending on your routing. The lines do not have room to go around the front of the bulkhead.

I put the aluminum on the inside and put anti-intrusion panels on the outside and used a 2.5" hole saw to cut a path for the cooling tubes on both the anti-anti-intrusion and interior aluminum. The dead pedal also fits nicely with the side aluminum and a small patch

This^ is exactly what I'm going to do. Are there pics out there that anyone knows of? This is a great idea.

Thanks for all the helpful replies, guys. Looks like I'm cutting a hole!

I just cut my side intrusion plate with a proper rectangle to clear the lines. (7075 3/16's aluminum)

Is a side intrusion plate mandated by any SCCA or NASA rules? Just the one, driver's side?

I am thinking that both coolant tubes going down the passenger side is my preference. Some use the Breeze coolant tube kit. I am wondering if a few fittings could be eliminated if you really thought it through and built your own tubes.
Especially for me who, like Chad, has a fuel cell in the passenger area. The feed and return tubes could route through the old gas tank area. At this point I'm just speculating.

Totally OPTIONAL, I'm glad I had done this on my challenge car, as it your ever spun in heavy traffic these will save you and cause less damage to the rollcage

The 818R Supplemental manual has a template for cutting out for the cooling tubes (both tubes run down the same side), also show R dead pedal install, which I don't think any of us actually received (maybe new builds have gotten these).

There should be a section for R stuff like this.

There is in the "818R Supplemental Instructions" manual that Jim put together, has some good info, can use more but a great start

There is a "R" sub forum...

:)

PS I can move this thread there if the OP wants me to.
