View Full Version : Fuel cap - I'm confused

To mount the fuel cap, the manual says to drill a 2.5" hole, and then using the flange as a guide drill 6 holes and then mount the cap. The inner piece on the right in this photo is 2.5" outside diameter so I can't see what holds it in place. The flange on the left in this photo would hold the center section from falling out but nothing holds it from falling in. Am I missing something or am I really stupid?

(At least I was smart enough to look at this before I drilled a hole.)

Mine was glued together and fell apart the first time I tried to remove the locking cap. Looks like it was just super glued or something. I can see the glue spots on yours. FFR needs to be aware of this. It should be brazed or at least a tight press fit.

Mike, Pete, send this photo to Joe Scott, they will get a new one to you that has the squiggle that you twist to remove. This one went out to early builders and is JUNK. I discussed in my thread a loooooooong time ago. As you know FFR is reactive to issues not proactive.

Thanks Mike and Dan. I'll follow up with Factory Five. They have always come through for me before on any product problems. Have a great Labor Day weekend.

Hey Pete,

How about the filler tube? Have you checked how that connects to the rest of the components? Is there a piece missing like a flange that would mate up with the outside flange? Just a suggestion. Good luck, WEK.

Mike

It was glued AFTER painting... so it was as strong as a thin layer of paint. You never glue after painting, always before...

Bill, the filler tube fits on the cap I've got but there's still nothing to hold the center section (& filler tube) from being pushed inward. It's like if I bumped it with the gas pump nozzle the filler pipe would recede inward and then it would be impossible to replace the fuel cap. On the other hand, the duct tape I have over the end of the filler pipe now is working well. ;) I'm relieved to know the defect is in the cap and not in my brain.

You can fix the old one with some S/S screws see my thread.

I called Factory Five and they are sending a new fuel cap. Said they changed sources to get a better cap. I know how relying on sourced parts can be frustrating at times and I also knew FFR would not let me down. Onward.

I received a replacement fuel cap from Factory Five yesterday and it's a beautiful billet piece. I installed it last night and it looks great and works perfectly!
