View Full Version : Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) installation

I've got a code for the TPS and think I may have installed it wrong. I recently learned that the TPS is very similar to the TGV sensors which should be installed by turning 90 degrees clockwise to preload the spring. Should the TPS be installed the same way, i.e., insert 90 degrees to the left and then rotate 90 degrees clockwise to the final position and bolt?

I've only worked with older ones ( 240-280z era ) where they simple and didn't have a preload. I wouldn't be surprised if the newer ones are the same. I found an article here which details how to properly adjust it which may be all that is needed: http://www.perth-wrx.com/vb/mechanicals/53246-adjusting-throttle-position-sensor.html

Thanks, Aaron. That's an interesting article from Perth. I couldn't find the bonnet and don't have spanners . . .
No, no, I can translate. :) I may end up doing all that but first I uncovered all the wiring (damn) and verified that all connections I made in extending the 6 wires have continuity (whew) and so next is checking the resistance in my DBW pedal. Thanks!
I was able to solve a P2021 code by reinstalling a TGV sensor. It has to be preloaded and I found that info by digging in NASIOC. The Subaru FSM only says to install the reverse of taking it off (!).

Since I started this thread I should give the result in case someone is looking for TPS info. The TPS in my 06 WRX is NOT the same as the TGV actuator. Apparently it was in some older cars. The solution was following the FSM diagnostic flow chart (Eng Diag). With a multimeter I found one of the wires from the accelerator pedal sensor to the throttle body had a ground short and fixed it. DTC code disappeared and engine revs to redline. Success!

What a coincidence. I just threw similar codes in my Venza. All research pointed to the same places, found a broken wire going to the throttle position sensor. I have never worked back there, nor has anyone else. Must have been nicked at the factory and finally gave out after 46,000 miles. Glad you found the culprit!
