View Full Version : Mishimoto WRX Top Mount Intercooler- Thoughts?

I'm debating on picking this up. I have a 2006 WRX intercooler- which I guess happen to be the smallest ones... Right now, I just have the stock TD04 turbo, but plan on upgrading soon. I do not plan on ever going over 350whp (trans issues). I would be happy with 320.

Besides this thread- http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2596082 Anyone have experience with it? Some great info in the thread you don't usually see manufactures provide.

I know I would probably have to modify some of the aluminum ducting from the 818R- But this looks like a great upgraded intercooler option. Comes in Black or Aluminum with your choice of red, blue, black silicon hoses $580. Seems reasonable.

Thoughts?

I think any intercooler upgrade is good as long as it fits in the space. I don't think you will have to go to crazy to get 320whp out of your 2.5. I am not sure yet on the airflow and heat soak on the 818 inter cooler. I seem like all of the tracks around here are hot.

Looks nice, may keep it in mind for a future upgrade. Just FYI, it seems Mishimoto's QC is color blind. I ordered a set of blue (stock) intercooler hoses for my motor and received red hoses, although the box was labeled blue. Returned them and got another box labeled blue; the hoses were red! I returned those as well, gave up and ordered black hoses. The hoses and clamps are nice, though.

Certainly an interesting approach.

I'm still not a fan of how FFR tries to duct the intercooler. I'm going to go AWIC myself most likely since the aftermarket TMIC I had with my donor is about 2 inches too big to fit under the engine cover.

The FFR ducting is questionable at best...take advantage of the side ducts... It's on my to do list... we should be able to get much better air flow to the sides, not sure what form factor IC will work best tho

I am go awic also, I think my intake temps lead to detonation and smoked my rings.

I would go awic unless you direct glow exactly like the FFR 818r heat soak issues here .

I think I'm going to give it a shot. If it fails to deliver, then I will go awic.

do you have any plans on improving the ducting to the ic, I have never been sure of the direction or amount of air that passes through

AVO makes a very nice TMIC as well. It is a bit more expensive and is designed for the 2008+ cars. I will try to come up with more information to share with everyone here shortly.

This is the solution I'm testing now. See my build for more information. Worth a try.
