Would this work instead of the included cable-shift linkage and shifter?

Hey guys. I have a few things that I've worked out on another Subie conversion that may or may-not be better than what's included. I already have spares of a few of these, and thought if I could use them...why not?

The first is a rear shift linkage that was made to use an MR2 shifter instead of the plastic Subaru one. It uses ball-bearings and some cool engineering to keep the cables flush with the side of the transmission. Seems to work very well, although I don't know if it'd work for an 818 build. I guess if it ain't broke...

The other piece is the MR2 shifter. VERY short throw, metal, and low profile. I have 2-3 and was thinking of using one of them in an 818. Would this work, or be better than what's documented?

I believe the MR2 shifter has been considered if not used by someone already. Different shorter morse cables will definitely be required for it.

are those cables going directly to the rear rather than around the front like the FFR cables? As Kurk said though, I thought I saw someone do something similar already. May have involved moving or lifting the gas tank to slide the shift cables underneath? (or my brain could just be jumbling together unrelated topics)

The MR2 cables do run back and im pretty sure they can be installed over the gas tank. I considered going that route with the 6speed but was able to make everything work with the existing cables.

BTW Mechie just added to his thread out a shifter linkage prototype similar to the one you have posted.

Yup. The mr2 shifter works well in my 914 conversion because of it points backwards. It's also metal and low profile...and about $30 on eBay.

My friend Ian makes the kit for the other 914 guys doing conversions, so I may have to get another for my 818 build.

Wayne Presley's shifter kit runs the cables to the rear, so you should be good. I'm running his kit sending the cables over the gas tank and around the left cylinders. Some are going under the intake, but I didn't diet enough stuff to make room, so around it goes. Check out his k-tuned shifter kit to compare. I don't see any problems with your proposed setup.
