View Full Version : Roll bar interference?

As my back ordered front springs for my 818S just arrived - after mounting them on the front suspension - I am noticing that there is very little clearance on the right side between the "IFS" bracket, the roll bar and the coil spring. Is this a worry? Is the roll bar likely to "walk" sideways in the rubber bushings? I am thinking of fashioning some kind of lateral movement limiter on the roll bar (like hose clamps or something). Any real world experience?

This is one of the several reasons I decided to ditch the sway bar.

"walking" of the bar is a common problem, and some manufacturers preclude it by slipping what is essentially a washer over each end of the bar and welding them to the bar on one side or the other of the rubber or polyurethane mount, which is what I was planning on doing with the 818's sway bar. Hope this is helpful.

This is a common problem on Jeep Wranglers. The common solution is to use a clamp on shaft collar. Jeep guys usually buy them from McMaster Carr. Just measure the diameter of the bar and get a collar with the same inside diameter. Put one on each side. They can go either on the outside or inside of the bushing mount, but they need to be the same on both sides or the bar will be able to move in one direction.

Here is how it looks on a TJ...

the newer WRXs have a similar ring to combat the same problem.

Is your car on the wheels? mine looks like the clearance will get better when its lowered to ride height.

You can put locking collars on them too.

Those are pretty, but aluminum ones from McMaster Carr are about 1/3 the price. :D

This made me go to the garage and check my sway bar. Now I just ordered a pair of locking collars from McMaster Carr but then I started looking around the site and found other stuff I absolutely need so total was $68! Are we supposed to have a budget?

I got 2 collars and here's what they look like installed on a 17mm sway bar. Other sizes available, too.

If anyone has installed their swaybar and is happy with the fit could you please post a few pictures of the right and left side. I cannot get mine to fit properly without banging into the coilovers. My donor 06 WRX sedan had a rear-end hit that crunched the trunk so now I'm second guessing whether the swaybar got bent, or I'm just being a doofus and bolting it in backwards or upside down.

Thanks... Jeff
