Folks,
I'm a forum virgin as this is my first post. I'm looking into crate engines for my mk4. I have settled on a small block 351w/427....but now i'm not finding any good packages out there. Two questions:
I have checked Engine Factory, Proformance Unlimited, and Summit Racing. Where else should I look?
Pricing is way higher than expected. I can't find a crate 351W for less than $12K. Is that crazy or what I should expect.
Thanks in advance. I have learned a lot just from reading through the forum every night!!!

By "good" packages I'm assuming you mean cheaper? Tell us more of what you're looking for and how you'll use the car. Lots of options out there on how to go about this. But a well built 351/427 with decent parts is not going to be cheap. Are you expecting carb or EFI?
You're going down a path that will be pricey in several other aspects as well because of the power. Things like transmission, clutch, axles, brakes, etc. Need to look at the build as a whole, if you're not already.

edwardb is correct re the whole package. Gordon Levy will make sure you are covered in that respect also.

Thanks for the quick feedback...here are some of my thoughts:
I would like to get near 400hp....that seems to be the sweetspot
This is for cruising only...no autox or track....so it needs to be drivable
I would like EFI...better from an efficiency and emissions perspective...but I know it breaks tradition
There is some attraction to a 427 to improve resale value...but I'm not attached to it
That's about it. I don't really know squat about engines other than the basics...I couldn't really tell any more detail about the architecture and design I need.
Gordon - I'll reach out when I'm off the road this week.

You don't need to spend $12K to get to 400 hp. A decent 331 will make that. A 347 will exceed it. A 351 without a lot done to it will get you there. A 351/427 stroker is going to be north of 500 hp. Personally, I don't think having the 427 displacement improves resale value. But that's just my opinion. Others may disagree. At the very least, there's nothing particularly authentic about a 427 in small block. Understand your points about EFI. There is a cost adder for it though. Have you thought about Coyote power? Less than the budget you mentioned, fuel injected, 412 hp out of the box. Plug and play. Runs great.

Recommend you have someone take you for a ride in a roadster with a 340 hp Ford Racing Crate Motor and see if you think it is not enough power.

I found crate engine prices to be lower at Jegs than at Summit. I am not sure if either one sells a turnkey setup because I didn't look. If you are looking for a turnkey engine checkout Gordon and Mike.

I ruled out the coyote early...but maybe I should reconsider. I read some stuff about the technical effort needed to tune it.... What do you think of the coyote versus the others? The prices I saw for the Coyote were north of $10K as well.

FYI, there's a junkyard Mustang GT Coyote in Arizona for $4k with 14k miles (car-part.com). Typically these come with the alternator, starter, belts and A/C compressor. Add a $1500 controls pack and then it's trans/flyhweel/clutch like any other motor.
Another one in Florida w/ trans (although it's the Chinese built 6 speed) for $6k.
Just make sure they'll warranty it to get it started. Some places are helpful, others don't want to hassle.

There is a supplier (non-forum supporter) running a special on the Coyote and engine control pack for $7200.
