View Full Version : Looks like larger aftermarket TMICs won't be a direct bolt on

I've had a few people ask about fitting a GrimmSpeed TMIC under the stock engine cover on the 818, bad news, it's too tall in the back.
Without a custom engine cover or some serious modification it just won't fit. This will hold true for the Process West, CX Racing, and any other bar and plate large TMICs. Bummer.

That is a bummer.
My first thought was, "I could make that work, what's the issue"? Then I realized, even though I like fabbing up custom stuff, others might find it a chore, intimidating, or just plain don't have the time. I'm like that with clutches. I just want it to work without install issues. Bolt it on, break it in, done. I don't want to drill holes in a flywheel for a custom fitment.

Didn't Wallace18 use one of these 4.5" thick intercoolers? Looks like a bracket and some extra silicone piping should do the trick.

Wallace18's is a custom mount though. It's laid flat with (I assume) custom brackets to hold it in that position. Laid back and moved back about 160mm. Custom pipes, too.

How much room is between the pipe and the shock brace? Picture looks like 2 inches. Seems like a hump hose on the TB would give you the flex you need.
If I have to cut, there's not going to me much left of my engine cover left, FFR took quite a bit out already to clear the roll bar.
your bar also has a nice upbend to it, mine is straight, therefore more clearance.

Anything will fit with some custom fabrication, it's just that given the space constraints the only bolt on options will be the WRX and the STI TMIC. I'm sure the newer GR/GV top mount could be made to fit as well but without moving the actual location of the TMIC and running extra boost piping they won't clear the "hood".
The extra kink in my strut brace is about 1/4" up at most in the middle and the 90s under the cooler weren't hitting it. I should have mentioned that this was with the TMIC bolted to the stock locating bracket that mount to the intake manifold, I did not use the left hand trans mounted bracket for the mockup.

And that's why I have a AWIC kit...

Agreed, I was just saying it may not take hours of fabrication to come up with a solution... I just don't want anyone to panic.

IMO the stock STI intercooler is the largest one that will fit. I had to make mine a custom job. Also the air to air unit is not as efficient as the water to air unit. Some thing to think about before spending money. VCP unit is the way to go if you want a bigger , better one IMO. I would have gone this way if I had not already bought my AMR unit.

I had posted some pics on my build thread showing how much higher it stuck up above the side panels. I'm on the fence with the AWIC. Not that it isn't a good price/setup/etc, I'm just trying to maintain my budget and need to evaluate a few things. I never liked the ducting solution that FFR was proposing anyways, and the AWIC certainly fixes that issue.

I hadn't decided what to do about an intercooler, and quite frankly, I didn't have any brilliant ideas. So I just sprung for the VCP kit with the blow off valve option. I can't wait! :)
