So, I finished the body buck, gonna take the body off and get started, and a local auto body/ specialty car guy stopped by to look at my MKIV. Can you guys gimme a range I can expect ? I'm thinking of silver, black or grey with complimenting but not white, stripe.

This thread should get you started.

Here's a direct price sheet from a very well known painter on the west coast who's done a ton of these. These are pretty representative prices from what I've seen.
http://www.streetrodpainter.com/images/pricing2.jpg
The summary is prices are all over the map, depending on what you want, how much you do yourself, the going rate for similar work in your area, etc. Lots of variables. Major point from my side is don't have someone do yours as the first they've ever done. Your local body shop may be the best painter ever, but if he hasn't done one of these, let him learn on someone else's. The cost for a decent paint job was the biggest surprise on my first build. Now I have a better idea what to expect.

I live in the upper midwest. Had these same type of questions, and couldn't find anyone within a reasonable distance who had done a FF Roadster. I went to almost every shop in town. Some wouldn't even consider doing it, as "working on fiberglass" wasn't their thing, and others said that "kit cars" are crap and take too much work. I literally had guys quoting $20k, just to get me to walk away. I ended up finding 2 shops that had a great interest in doing the work. 1 was a traditional body shop, but the owner raced cars and was of the age that he remembered and appreciated what we were trying to replicate. The second was a single guy shop who does a lot of custom hotrod work. Beautiful stuff, and wanted to add a roadster to his list of work. What I found was that finding guys who appreciated the beauty of the car, and that also appreciated that we were building it ourselves, and that WANTED to be part of the project was the most important part. From there we talked about what it would take, the steps they would go through, and looking at previous work. The shop I selected ended up doing a bunch of research themselves and came back with a plan to do my car. At shows I've been to, I always get comments on the quality of the bodywork and the paint, and it does look really good! I ended up investing about $5k into the project (labor and materials) which included undercoating the body as well as everything related to the body. I suspect the price somewhat reflects the market I'm in, but given that most other estimates I received ranged from $7,500 - $12,000, I think I got a very fair deal, in part because I found a local guy, who wanted to be part of the project. He also said that it was a great "reward" to his crew to work on something like this, because about 90% of the work they do is bumpers and doors... Not a lot of fun. As a bonus, I know that he has done 2 others since, with a couple more coming. So he got some good upside from my referrals as well. So... my recommendation is to invest a little time finding a shop that has motivation beyond another payday. I can't guarantee you'll get a better price, but I would be pretty confident in stating that you'll get a better outcome. BTW, from drop-off to pick up was about 5 weeks, and they were happy to have me come by every couple of days and take pictures! (or at least they tolerated me with a smile) Just my 2 cents.

Quotes in my area - about 50 miles west of Chicago - ran from $7k - $12k... after I did the majority of the work myself. Basically, they were quoting for just blocking the body a few times, smoothing out my work, and shooting color and clear (plus final cut and buff). I talked to half a dozen shops, but ended up going with a friend's shop and got the friends & family discount so my final cost is about 1/2 the lowest estimate from the others ... bonus is that the shop is enthusiastic about the work as Slider mentioned above.

Call Jeff at Troast Autobody in Rockaway, NJ
He has done several older FFR's.
If Rockaway is not close to you, where in NJ are you located, as there are over 40 FFR's in NJ alone.

Not the wrong coast, I am just more familiar with the West. There are roadsters all over the world but I can only give experience on what I know first hand.

I grew up in WML
Was just in Parsippany (and Denville, Rockaway, Sparta, Netcong) last week visiting my dentist (well worth the 2 hour trip each way).

Try Zorilla's Auto Body if you're in the North Bergen area. Around $3,500 and he's done F5s before.

Anybody you guys recommend in North Carolina? I know Whitby's in greensboro and heard of NC Painter but not sure if they are in business still. Any others to check out that have done roadsters before? What are typical prices in this area?

A friend of mine has his body (for the car:D) at USA Auto Body in Clayton, about 10 miles SE of Raleigh. 810 Loop Rd. Clayton, NC 27527
(919) 553-4999 They have a very good reputation among the local Cobra, classic, and hot rod crowd. If interested, PM me and I'll let you know how it turns out. Most of the body prep work has been done, so the price is very reasonable.

Whitbys in Greensboro does a great job. They build complete Cobras if you need that and they have a full time paint shop. Jeff painted my hard top and matched the color and stripe to a 10 year old MK-1 perfectly.
