View Full Version : Four Piston Wilwood Brake Lines

The 4 piston 12-inch Wilwood brakes come without any brake lines and you cannot reuse the stock Subaru brake lines. From what I could tell, the 6 piston brakes come with brake lines in the kit. The Wilwood brakes come with 1/8-27 NPT threads and the Subaru brake lines have metric (M10x1.25 I believe) banjo bolts. We had to separately order brake lines and adapters (1/8-27 NPT to 3/8-24). The Wilwood web site sells brake lines as a supplement to the brake kit that is provided by Factory five. We opted to order from an alternate source as the Wilwood sells the same brakeline kit they sell for the Subaru and we wanted to avoid the SAE to metric adapters and the Wilwood kit was pricier ($143 vs. $90). The Wilwood recommended brake lines for the rear of the car calls for 14 inch brake lines (which in our case was too short) and 18 inch lines in the front – which works fine. In the end, we ended up with 18-inch lines in the front and 16-inch lines in the rear.
The alternate source we went to was Capital Motorsports (cmwraceparts.com) and we ordered the following for a 2004 WRX donor.
2 pk XRP402603 -3 to 3/8-24 male to female fittings (packs of 2)
4 ea XRP981603 -3 to 1/8in Pipe Straight Fitting
2 ea SBL318 18in -3 Brake Line
2 ea SBL316 16in -3 Brake Line
The cost was about $90 for everything, though you could save about $17 if you want to use the fittings from the kit and delete the first item in the list above. I purchased them because they allow us to run the brake lines directly into the fittings without using the metric adapters.
Make sure you double-check the specifics for your donor model.
There are photo's in our build thread that show the different brake lines installed - 14 and 16 in the rear and 18 in the front (508's stroker build thread).
Hope this helps future Wilwood 4 piston brake users.

Do the Wilwood rear brakes incorporate an emergency brake or do you have to use the OEM E-Brake set-up?
Thanks,
John

The Wilwood brake comes with a hat to go over the OEM E-brake setup. Make sure you order the right set for your donor. The OEM e-brake comes in different diameters depending on your donor.

Not a big problem if you didn't, about $70 at Rock Auto replaces most of it with brand new (still need to salvage the arm that runs to the cable).

That's for the front. Do we need it?
I am a bit confused, as on another thread, this has been mentioned for the REAR lines with Wilwoods:
We went to Capital Motorsports (cmwraceparts.com) and the following is the setup that worked for us
2 ea XRP402603 -3 to 3/8-24 male to female fittings (packs of 2)
4 ea XRP981603 -3 to 1/8in Pipe Straight Fitting
2 ea SBL318 18in -3 Brake Line
2 ea SBL316 16in -3 Brake Line
The cost is about $90 for everything, though you could save about $17 if you want to use the fittings from the kit and delete the first item in the list above. I purchased them because they allow us to run the brake lines directly into the fittings without using the metric adapters.
So the above is for rear and the link you provided if for the front if we want to replace the front?

OP didn't want to use metric to std adapters so he pieced it together custom. If you don't have a problem with the adapters, and want to buy an off the shelf item, I was just pointing out Wilwoods PN... I updated my original post with the rear lines.

Bit of on-topic question:
Will the 4 piston 12-inch Wilwood brakes offered by FFR fit under 15 inch wheels?

I forgot about the adapters. So the Wilwood's are with the adapters for a total cost of $130 or so, 4 wheels, no brainer direct fit.

Yes they should.
Wilwood Front 140-9193 and Rear 140-7006 are speced to clear 15". Also they fit on 1999 Subarus, as per Wilwood. If 1999 use 15", then it fits.
Just make sure the FFR ones you get are similar or equal to the parts numbers above (drilled or not, slotted or not, black calipers or red, all different part numbers but same physical kit).
