Well, I guess it's time to start a build thread...
I've been in the Subaru family since 2009. I previously had a 2008 Subaru Impreza STi that I purchased nearly stock (had a Cobb Accessport). After getting pretty heavy into HPDE with NASA AZ, the car was eventually turned into a completely gutted Time Attack car.

Well, the car was making almost 500 AWHP and apparently I have bad luck with motors... After breaking a few, I decided that I wanted to change to a lighter platform, which would require less power/stress to go fast. That's when I stumbled across the Factory Five Racing Project 818.
I placed my pre-order for my 818S on 7 December 2012. Initially, I had a build date of 14 February 2014. After Factory Five established a "Hot List" for people who wanted to get theirs quicker (due to other people cancelling or pushing their production dates back), I ended up with a final production date of 9 November 2013!!!
I purchased my donor (2006 WRX with 123k miles) in May 2013 from Copart for $4,800 (includes shipping). The car had a fair amount of front end damage, which didn't really concern me because I have planned on upgrading the shortblock and heads from the beginning.

So far, I've sold $3,150 worth of parts from the donor. So, I'm only into my donor for $1,650. Off to a good start.

Cleaned nuts/bolts by soaking in vinegar, then placing in a vibratory tumbler. Finally had them coated with black oxide to prevent rust/corrosion. I don't have a picture prior the vinegar or before the tumbling.
After tumbling:

Day 3:
Not much to do today. I just installed the mid/forward interior panels. With these, I wanted to try something different. The Rustoleum bed liner was ok, but it was fairly inconsistent and left SOME striping. In the interior, I tried the bed liner spray from Dupli-Color. It has more of a soft rubber feels and it takes FOREVER to dry. I ended up just installing them after about 3 hours of drying (and I still left some fingerprints in some areas....) If I had to do it over again, I would have stuck with the Rustoleum...

With any bed liner on aluminum I recommend a primer first, at least a flap wheel sand with 60 to have any good results. For roll on herculiner is good, for spray, sem, for sent out liner x

Great start, Jerome. I look forward to seeing more of your fine work as you progress. Aarrgh, at the rate you're going I think my 818S will not be the first one on AZ roads. I sent a PM asking if you still have the donor HVAC system. If so, I'll buy.

I do wish that the crossbars for the seat allowed using standard aftermarket seat rails... I'll have to come up with something to mount the seat rails to, along with some anchor points for the 6 point harnesses...
More to come!

Day 5:
Well, today was a little more productive. :-D
I got my front and rear brakes installed, along with the hubs. (I'm still waiting on my Whiteline adjustable lateral links).
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t43/JeromeS13/Project%20818/Day%205/IMG_20131122_231629_zpse16e906d.jpg (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/JeromeS13/media/Project%20818/Day%205/IMG_20131122_231629_zpse16e906d.jpg.html)

Also installed my steering rack (will be replacing the bushings with Whiteline bushings).
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t43/JeromeS13/Project%20818/Day%205/IMG_20131122_231714_zps813a33d9.jpg (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/JeromeS13/media/Project%20818/Day%205/IMG_20131122_231714_zps813a33d9.jpg.html)
Installed the throttle pedal and fully installed the steering column. I was trying to not use a quick release... Looks like I might need one after all, or just a thicker hub... Hmm...
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t43/JeromeS13/Project%20818/Day%205/IMG_20131122_231757_zps899eb870.jpg (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/JeromeS13/media/Project%20818/Day%205/IMG_20131122_231757_zps899eb870.jpg.html)
I also got the seat fully installed. Ended up using 1/4" aluminum to mount the Sparco rails to. The rear mounting point goes through the 1x1 section of the chassis, the aluminum, and the Sparco rails. It also looks like I'll be able to use the upper 2x2 bar as my anchor points for my 6 point harnesses. :-D

Yea ej207, the heads flow great numbers for higher rev range, which is what I was going for. I have seen 8k already with the cart, let's just say, damnnnn fast. It's got power everywhere since it is so lite, but say 2,500-8k, it is like you get hit by a train and thrown forward and than kinda lwarp speed, it's like a 600 street bike launch feeling , but your on the ground and it's four wheels.

@Frank. Everything is just lined up by eye on the rack. It looks like both hubs are pointed straight and the rack should be centered. Hopefully I'm good. :-D

slide off the rack boots and see where the inner tie rod pivots are... The steering wheel has just over 3 turns, lock to lock, easy to make sure that it is in the middle. The inner tie rods are the travel stops. You should see just over 2.5 inches sticking out of each side when the rack is centered.

Day 7:
Started assembling the motor. Started with a sweet B1 short block assembly (OEM short block with JE pistons) from LIC Motorsports. The block has all matching BB cylinders. I just need to clean and paint a few things and I'll finish buttoning it up this week. Hopefully it'll be in the car by this weekend. :-D

Started installing my rear firewall. The lower section will be permanently mounted, but the top section will be removable. I'm using 1/4" button head bolts and rivnuts. I'll probably be having these powder coated wrinkle black, since they'll be fully exposed.

This is the area between the tank and the firewall. I should have plenty of room to make the wiring and ECU pretty tidy. I believe I'll also route the passenger rear brake line through here to keep it away from the engine/exhaust heat.

I started making a rear firewall to place between the hot exhaust manifolds and the fuel tank. I've placed a layer of the EZ Cool material (can be seen on the inner firewall in the picture) on the backside of the fuel tank. This firewall panel will have another layer of the EZ Cool on the back side and gold foil on the exposed side. I'm also making an upper panel, that will cover all but the outside triangular area behind the driver (this is where the wiring harness, etc. will be ran.
Fitting:

Today's objective? Finish the clutch hard line and rear brake hard lines.
I terminated the clutch soft line at the driver's rear of the car, instead of the FFR recommended place in the front of the engine. I modified and used the OEM bracket. You can also see the driver side rear brake hard line. There's plenty of clearance around both lines.

Since I had plenty of room in front of the fuel tank, I decided to route the passenger rear brake line through there. This will keep it out of the engine bay and minimize heat transfer from the exhaust/engine.

Honestly, I'm not sure. I think the stuff I used is from DEI? Their info states 80% reflective. I've seen some stuff commercially available that claims 95% reflective. But, I'm not too concerned about it, since I have three layers of various products between the exhaust and the tank.
Here's a link to the 95% reflective stuff.

That is the inlet. It's a dual pass unit from Ron Davis. So, the inlet and outlet are on the same side. The hard pipe should give me plenty of hood clearance (or so I'm hoping).

Cleaned nuts/bolts by soaking in vinegar, then placing in a vibratory tumbler. Finally had them coated with black oxide to prevent rust/corrosion. I don't have a picture prior the vinegar or before the tumbling.

A complete linkage is a longer term item. I was going to redesign the little fork/hanger bit as a start. It's only the way it is so that it can be an inexpensive laser cut/bent piece. I've had a design in my head for some time, just need to actually measure and prototype.

I definitely am! I haven't even had the car for two months yet... The wheels and tires are:
Enkei Kojin
17x8 + 45 Front (with 10mm spacers)
18x9.5 + 45 Rear (with 13mm spacers)
Federal 595 RS-R
235/40/17 Front

The fronts rub the corner of the front firewall a little. But, I may have a remedy for that. :-D

Guys, Jerome does beautiful work! I stopped by his house on Sunday and admired his nearly-finished 818. Up close it's much better than these photos - shifter, wheels, engine, brakes, seats, body panels, shifter (again), are all beautiful. And, the sound is a very cool deep tone with an equal-length header, though loud without the 3" cat and muffler he will add. It was delivered less than two months ago and he's got a full-time job! Oh, just some usual stuff:
Exhaust - Vibrant muffler and Vibrant cat (v-band and removable)
Mounting for the AWIC, reservoir, and heat exchanger

Upper radiator mounts

And some brackets here and there

Based on what Erik said about his setup which he qualified of "pushing the limits" to see what it can take. After reading many builds, fittings and etc., it seems like 9.5 +35 and 265s are close to the max possible to fit without modifications or rubbing somewhere. I thought it was risky for me to go with that setup. If you made it with 3mm more, then great, it really seems to mean it can fit without problem. :)

So, I'm a little upset today... After I was told on 23 December that "The Carbon Fiber Parts are being made as we speak and can be sent out by the beginning of next week", I got an email today stating "it is going to be approx. another 2 months before we see the new autoclaved carbon pieces"... I paid in full on 22 October and I know that I've seen kits that have shipped out AFTER mine was received, and they've already received their carbon pieces... I understand FFR trying to save some shipping costs, but at the expense of 2 months of another builder? Come on... I was also told last week (8 January) that "we just received the new 1 piece caps yesterday"... However, they still haven't shipped mine yet... I also have not received my coolant tube adapters. But fortunately, AZPete loaned me his... But I still owe him a set...
Does FFR even track the back ordered parts? Or is it up to the customer to nag them until they ship them? I'm starting to get a little perturbed...

It’s definitely a frustration that I didn't expect when I ordered my kit from FFR and it's usually the first thing I mention when someone asks me about my experience. I'm still waiting on my radiator hose adapters after 8 weeks! I was told on the 10th that they were still on order and they hoped to have them in a few more weeks. I would have my motor running two weeks ago if I had them.
You will definitely have to call and pester Factory Five to get you back ordered parts.

Feel your pain. While we haven't been waiting for 2 months yet, we have been waiting over a month and still don't have some of the basic parts like the fuel tank and front springs (and 6 others including the carbon fiber parts). It is aggravating to see new posts including photos of parts that have been back ordered on your kit.

I recommend you keep on top of it. Ive received back ordered parts and the list with it showed other items no longer back ordered that hadn't shipped (my carbon fiber). I had to remind them and when other kits starting shipping remind them again. I just got my diffuser fins this week after inquiring again. Took a couple emails to get my fuel filler tube. Usually when I see someone with a new kit post up with parts i was missing I'd email joe and ask to have mine shipped too.

But, am I wrong in thinking that the CUSTOMER shouldn't be the ONLY one tracking what's due to them?

Well I returned my fuel tank to FFR, since I installed a Boyd, so at least one builder will get a b-o'ed tank! ;)

Jerome, You are absolutely correct, the factory should keep the BO list. FFR does, but they don't seem to keep the customer update on what is on it.
I got both updated parts and backordered parts with no paperwork in the box.
I called Jessie in shipping. She sent me a copy of what was owed to me. I compared that to my list and had FFR make correction.
I inventoried my kit the day it arrived. I sent the list to FFR. That list got lost.
FFR was very quick to get the list straighten out.
On Back ordered parts, FFR tries to wait until the have everything to ship at once to save on shipping cost. I would do that also but FFR should keep you informed.
If there is a part holding you up. You should call and have that ship ASAP. Also get them to send you a BO list.

OK. I just got off the phone with Jay a few minutes ago. He said he would get with the local guy that makes the hand formed CF pieces and get him to make the race splitter and rear diffuser for me (instead of waiting 2 months on the new autoclaved pieces). He said they would need to make them of course, but should be able to ship them out in a couple of weeks. He also stated that he would get with shipping (can't remember her name) and get my fuel cap shipped out. I just got an email with tracking info for the fuel cap and received another call from Jay stating that the guy who made the CF pieces was actually there dropping off some pieces and that mine will be shipping out no later than Wednesday! Yeah buddy!
He also mentioned that they've been waiting on the radiator adapter pieces for quite some time. I mentioned to him that Speedway Motors has them and said they'd look into it.
All is good.

With the factory studs, there isn't enough thread to allow for spacers. The rears will not clear without spacers.

Yes. But he asked about the same wheel/tire setup specifically. If you could get the setup of 17x8 +35 front and 18x9.5 +32 with 235/40/17 and 265/35/18, sure it would work without spacers and with factory studs.

What's up Jerome. I am about to order my wheels and I wanted to double check before doing so. I really like your setup but didn't want to run into too many issues to achieve it.
Bottom line is if you could reorder would you go with the same size wheels & tires or pull it back some?

It's really hard for me to answer that question at this point in my build. I haven't worked on the car in around a month (at the fabricator, now I'm out of town). I do not have all of the trim panels, etc. installed yet. I THINK everything is going to workout... But, as it sits now, the front tires do rub on the outside corner of the firewall on each side (I think I have a solution for this). I haven't driven the car with the fenders installed, so I don't know if they'll rub those, either.
Initially, I was going to order 215/40/17 and 255/35/18, but the 215/40/17 was on backorder with no due date. That's why I ended up going with the 235/40/17 and 265/35/18.

Alright guys. I know it's been a while (car was at the fabricator's for two weeks followed by me going out of town for two weeks). So, I don't really have a lot to update. I've also been getting super flustered with fitting the front body panels. The area where the bumper, fenders, hood, and headlights meet are not playing nice and/or I have no idea what I'm doing... I may have to call in some favors from some friends...
As far as actual updates go, here's what I have:
Exhaust fabricated by Junior @ Fathead Fabrications. It uses the dump pipe from Kinugawa for the twin scroll VF37. He mated that to a Vibrant 3" muffler. In between, you'll see a removable catalytic converter on v-band clamps. I also have a test pipe that can go in its place.

^^ What Goldwing said. It just adds to the capacity and keeps the intake temps down for longer. On track days, I'll have the option of adding ice to increase the cooling capacity even more.

Well, I took her for a test drive around the neighborhood today. Just to see if things were solid. I thought that I got the toe zeroed out front and rear, but she's a bit sketchy at 40+ mph. Also, I need to clearance a few things in the front and rear to eliminate some tire rub.
On a lighter side of things, I'll be finding out how much a replacement bumper is this week... I was taking it easing pulling into my driveway (at an angle) and heard a very distinct crunch sound... Oh well. I was able to back into my driveway at an angle without further incident. Here's the culprit and the resulting damage:

Oh no! Sorry man! You could consider repairing it. Thickened Epoxy or polyester resin to glue the crack. Use some thickened resin to fill the texture of the rough fiberglass on back, and immediately apply a few pieces of fiberglass cloth and wet out (it turns clear) with your chosen resin. Once wetted out, lightly squeegee off excess without starving the cloth (turning it white again). For extra security, embed a reinforcing material between the layers of fiberglass (metal or wooden strip). Then a gel coat repair kit on the front side to pretty it back up. Bondo for chips, but fiberglass in back there too would help reinforce it. This reaffirm my thought that selective reinforcing of the body might be a good idea. I had just thought of doing it for the hood and trunk pieces to allow for hinging and gas rods. The reinforcing plans were pretty much the same procedure I described above.

I thought that I got the toe zeroed out front and rear, but she's a bit sketchy at 40+ mph.
That's usually rear toe. Specifically, rear toe out. Rear toe out can make a car really sketchy, quickly. Depending on how much the rear wants to step out, I'd even look into running a hint of rear toe in over just zeroing it out.
Front toe out can make a car want to drive down the crown.

At first I wasn't sure I was going to put my splitter on but now I realize it might be the lesser of two evils if it could give me some early detection of front end damage. Sorry this happend. Looks like we'll all need to be careful.

I didn't double-check my ride height before I test drove... Accidentally ended up @ 3.5" in the front...

Good to know, and thanks for the heads-up! Sorry for your damage, but your driveway doesn't look much worse than mine; I hope to avoid the same.

I'm using a Bridjit + homemade wood contraption combination to try and prevent this from happening to me. I have an even larger curb than Jerome, so I have to be careful as well.

Weighed it today. This is with and without driver, and approximately half a tank of fuel.

He installed a good amount of sound deadener and heat insulating material. Also the AWIC and twin scroll header add some weight.

How do you feel about the corner weighting? What should you strive for?
Don't all 818s run over on weight? You also have those big-*** wheels and tires. Thanks for the data.

What would you say made for the extra 200 lbs over the claimed 1800lbs?
Air-to-water intercooler
Reservoir for intercooler
Hoses/fitting for intercooler
Heavier/larger wheels & tires
Larger radiator (Ron Davis dual pass)
Heat/sound insulation (minimal amount of weight added)
As I recall, even the 818S that FFR built at the open house (with lightweight wheels, etc) still weight 1828 lbs. No mention of how much fuel was in the tank.

I'm not taking those corner weights to heart. The scales were setup in a parking lot at the track. They're used only to get the overall vehicle weight for racing purposes. Since they're not on completely flat ground, I'm sure they're off by a little.
Also, I have no idea about corner balancing. I need to start looking into that.

When I asked this of the chief mechanic at Fall-Line Motorsports his response was "As a general rule, you want cross-weights to be within 25 lbs." I asked him "even on a 3,500lb car like my Mustang?" He said, "Oh yeah."
Then I asked him about front to rear weights, and he just shrugged his shoulders saying, "They are what they are, get the cross-weights spot on." So my Mustang is now w/in 5lbs (+/- 5 lbs) with 180 lbs of ballast in the driver's seat to simulate the driver's weight (and my customary ave. fuel load). Of course, this attention to detail is for serious track use.
For the street, I wouldn't sweat it much. If you think about it, throwing your golf-clubs in the back of your Vette or taking a passenger along in your Porsche for a joy ride is going to wildly throw off those numbers...and the car doesn't suddenly become a handful to drive. For that matter, with fuel loads on track during a sprint race dropping considerably, even my attempt to zero in on the cross-weights is undone.
Best,
-j

I think I will come in the 1900-1950 lb area.
My wheels are not light, but my seats, kirkeys are like super lite, my radiator ( koyo) is stock size and lite and I have an Sti cooler. We have the same engine and tank, you got the Boyd too. so I should be 50-100lbs less. If it's below 1900 I will be surprised. Btw my 4 pot fronts are not lite, you got 4 pots too ?

That's the nice thing about this project, you are never done if you don't want to be.
A set of lightweight brakes, lighter flywheel, wheels, shorter bolts, .... adios another 50 lbs. you can always be trimming the fat.
I'm hoping for under 2000 with me in the car. Nice job.

That's me rev-matching on down shifts.
Thanks guys! Right now, I'm just running around on low boost (~11 psi) while I'm on our crappy 91 octane. I'll be playing around with e85 and higher boost soon.

Muffler, yes. Cat was removed. But, it sounds pretty much the same without the cat, at least after initial warmup.

Thanks, guys! Well, it's practically all together and functional (aside from the front splitter, rear diffuser, and rear wing). I've been driving it around a bit. I just need to start making things 'prettier', like painting the dash, door panels, center console, etc. I also need to start thinking about whether I'm just going to try to repair the gel coat, or wrap/paint it... *sigh* Most of that is on hold though, as I will *hopefully* be doing a shakedown during an upcoming track event with NASA (only doing DE4, no TT for meow). My friend who tunes Subarus is also coming into town before that event, and he'll be tuning it on the dyno for me. I've already switched to e85, so I'm hoping to see 300+ to the wheels. I do need to troubleshoot a bit, though... I'm getting a code for one of the oil control valves (I think for the driver's side). Hopefully it's something simple... Also, I need to wrap my exhaust and intercooler pipes.

Ok so say 1 week to get the inventory done and things placed around, you started end of Nov and plated end of March. 4 months. That's quick! You have a 5-day/week job besides building the kit? Then I believe I can make it in 12 months.

I did my inventory in one evening. I'm active duty Air Force, so I do have a regular work schedule. However, I took the entire week off after I received my kit. So, I got a good head start! Also, I'm single and live alone, so I didn't have anyone complaining about spending entire evenings and the whole weekend in the garage! A year should be plenty of time, if you're just tinkering around in the evenings and weekend.
Oh, I was also gone for two weeks of that, and it was at the fabricator's shop for two more weeks. So, I basically did it in 3 months.

It must be starting to warm up in AZ this time of year (I know, I was in Scottsdale for 2 years). if you get too bored sitting around in the A/C, head on over to SoCal, it's cooler and there's an 818 waiting for you. ;)

Yeah, one benefit of Phoenix, AZ is that it never really got too cold to work on my car. The only thing we really have to worry about is the hot summers...
I do love San Diego! Not sure that would be a very comfortable drive in the 818, though... We'll see, though. It'll be quite tempting to go from 118 degrees to a cool 80 on the coast!
Oh, and a lot of people give me crap about my Pink Ribbon plate. Doesn't bother me, though. I'm all about saving the boobies! Plus, I've had several family members that had cancer and one of my racing buddies' mom passed away from it... So, both of my cars rock the Pink Ribbon plates.

I ended up taking the car to an informal car show last night. They do it every Saturday night and usually have 250+ cars. I spent about 3 hours answering the question of "What is it???". Haha. I did get the occasional Tesla and one guy even said Koenigsegg.. Overall, the response was fantastic and a few guys even wanted to order one. Haha.

Transmission can come out with the engine installed. I initially only installed my engine inot the chassis first and attached the transmission after. Just remember the engine has to be braced to prevent it from rocking fore/aft on its mounts.

Seems that the transmission will only go into reverse if I release the clutch and roll the car forward, while holding the shifter in the reverse position? No issues going into any other gear... :-/
