View Full Version : Wheel well roundness

I am getting ready to build my 2nd roadster. My first was a MK2 in 2001/2002. Didn't keep it long due to family needs. Now its time. I have a question about the wheel well openings. On my first, and looking at pictures of the MK4, the wheel wells are not round. It looks like there are several radii that make up the roundness or lack thereof. Just wondering why that hasn't been addressed in the 11 years since my first roadster? Does no one else see it? Or maybe it doesn't matter to most. I know these cars aren't symmetrical, but if small adjustments to the molds could make a more uniform appearance, why wouldn't they? Does this bother anyone else?

I agree especially concerning the rears which are way to long in side view.

I've always thought the side on view was the least attractive of the roadster whatever version or original. I think the fat tires and the 15 inch wheels gave a different profile which may have helped it look better. But I've learned to live with the lower profile tires. If you hadn't mentioned it, I probably would not have worried about it. Maybe someone can do a photo shop makeover to see if it would clean up the wheel well profile. I get so excited about all the other angles, by the time I get around to the side it doesn't matter to me.

Thanks, WEK.

I for one, would like to see some photo shop wheel well options that could be body-worked into the build.

I also would like to see photoshop pics. Or maybe someone from Factory Five could chime in on the out-of-round condition of the wells. Skullandbones....I'm with you. I never heard anyone say anything negative about my car, always positives. And I guess, who cares anyway. Ain't nobody looking at the wheel wells. But being I built it I knew where the mistakes were.

What I was thinking about was the roundness of the wheel wells of the 818 and the GTM. I don't know what it would look like for a roadster to have that much symmetry to those areas. They look fabulous on those cars but I don't know how much you would shape it up to get a good look. If you went all the way like the more modern cars, I just don't know if it would translate well. IMO, WEK.

I could be wrong, but I don't think they are suppose to be wrong. The MK4 body is made from "real" ones. Agreed that 15" wheels and tires make it look way better and like it should.

I read this thread yesterday, and I have also thought the wheel openings on most roadsters could somehow be better, but I've never seen one that looked just right to me. Earlier today I was watching Thursday's coverage of the Mecum auction, and lot #T223 caught my eye. On TV, this particular Backdraft roadster looked like it had the ellusive "perfect" (imho) wheel openings. When I pulled up the pictures on Mecum's website http://www.mecum.com/auctions/lot_detail.cfm?LOT_ID=CH1013-166648&entryRow=202&lottype=&startRow=201 it somehow didn't look as good, but it's still a very nice looking car.

Now that I think more about it, some roadsters have better wheel openings than others, but most of the roadsters I've seen look pretty darned good to me. I guess I'm just not going to worry about it.
