I have two sets of avcs intake gears. They have different part numbers and there different colors. One set is a gold color (bought used, just posted a wanted to buy single avcs gear ad, and this is what I got. Set two are off a complete 07 Wrx motor that I have. Does anybody know if they are different? And what the differnces may be. Thx

When you click on the pic it gets larger. Is the gold hue just from the oil used in the motor?

Oil shouldn't be on the outside face of that unless something was leaking.

I'm not aware of differences in the AVCS intake cams, but there are AVCS exhaust cam gears. Not sure what they look like.

Mechie is correct, I've looking at the Lotus lately. No oil there.

They are exactly the same in every way except the last number of the part number and color. I don't think it's a concern but I figured I would ask. Thx everybody.

did you try looking up the part numbers and cross referencing if there is a difference between intake and exhaust?

When I did part number searches years didn't come up. Exhaust cam gears on single avcs hears are the same as none avcs heads. I just put the "gold" ones on. They had the same exact part number as the "bronze ones except the late munger was 1 instead of 0. I put the bronze ones back on the 07 motor I have

The gold color is also possibly from an aftermarket timing belt. The Gates high-performance timing belts are blue and can leave blue markings or residue on the gears and rollers. I think there are some yellow performance timing belts as well.

To the OP: Show us all 4 of the cam gears you have in a shot if you can. Hopefully you have at least one complete set of intake gears. The ones you have pictured are both for the bank 2 (drivers side) intake cam. The different color doesn't make any difference AFIK, they both should be the same part. For the most part, the AVCS intake gears have been the same in the US since the STI was introduced. The exhaust gears have changed though as in recent years Subaru has exhaust side AVCS on some models which look more like this:

Also, oil gets on the gears when you take the triangular caps off to remove them from the engine. Some oil also stays in the gears and can drip out after it's fully removed. If the guy who sold them to you didn't wipe the oil off, I imagine it would be possible to get some residue/staining from oil being on the gear during shipping. Also, if the guy who sold them to you didn't provide the triangular caps - you'll need to get some as you will destroy your engine and your timing belt if you try to start up with those off. Here's the part numbers

If you need the bank 1 cam gear (which looks like the one on the right below) let me know, I have a set that I can sell.

Oh, when you insert an image URL, uncheck "Retrieve remote file and reference locally" and your image will no longer thumbnail to the smaller size.

Brandon. The 2 gears in the pic are the same side (unsure off hand what side) they are actually manufactured different colors not some thing that changed because of heat and oil. They seem exactly the same, only difference I see is the part number is different. I did a few searches and nothing came up so I just used the gold ones. The gold ones part number ends with 000 and the bronze one ends with 001. Maybe ill try and search around again for info..how tight do you torque the three cover bolts too?
