Wow! I thought my stock donor engine from AJW looked good after I cleaned/polished/painted it, but yours is much cooler. I'm thinking that AJW might get their address file mixed up and ship that engine to me by mistake. As my goofy sister says, "If you think it hard enough, it can happen."
Can you tell us what this engine has inside?

Yes plz, tell us what's in there. Looks is one thing, but it ain't nothing if it's empty inside. loll I'm sure it's not empty though! :)

Thanks guys-
I'm starting it out slow, nothing too crazy with a stock turbo (Due to transmission concerns). The motor was built with future upgrades in mind. I have a Legacy GT trans that I will be using, with another as a spare. They are crating it up and shipping it my way.
Motor:
AJW Special 2.5L
2013 STI Shortblock
Balanced/Printed
JE Forged Pistons
Forged Rods
STI Nitrated Crank
OEM Bearings
ARP Headbolts
Gates Timing Belt Kit
STI Heads (Single AUCS)
Port/Polish
Upgraded 272 Cams
OEM Head gaskets
Killer B Motorsports (Baffle, pick up, Oil pan)
Torque Solutions Air Pump Delete
Cobb V3 Accessport
Perrin lightweight crank pulley
Stock TD04 for now...

"slow" usually doesn't mate well with "race engine". lolll
Nice upgrades there.
What does that mean "special 2.5L"?

What are the advantages of the 2013 shortblock?

What are the advantages of the 2013 shortblock?
You would need to ask them. I am clueless and new to Subaru's in general. That's why I left it all to them.
Now if you want to talk to me about Porsche motors, like stuffing a Porsche 3.6L into an 818R..... I might be able to help a year down the road...lol

My friend, who's also my mech, is doing Porsches too. And his friend has all the recent special Porsches, the Turbo, GT2, GT3 and even GT3 4.0. I want that engine in my 818. lolll The scream at 8500 is... no wonder why I can't say, there's no word for it! :)
That being said, since I have an easy access to a lot of German flat-6 configurations, my dream would certainly be to have one of them (along with its tranny!!) in the 818. Without frame modifications. lolll Like I said: "dream". :)
As for AJW, I can see they can do EVERYTHING on that flat-4 (and maybe the EZ30 too), which increases my confidence in them.

What are the advantages of the 2013 shortblock?
The 2013 STi short block comes with an induction hardened crank which has a significantly greater case depth hardness than the nitride version. There were several reports of the nitride crank failing. I personally feel this may due to stress risers introduced in the post grinding process. We have been nitride processing our cranks since 2005. We don't grind them but pre and post polish them. 21508. The other reason Subaru may have gone to the induction hardened crank is that it is serviceable (can be ground undersize) without reducing the hardness significantly.

Chad, congratulations on the beautiful engine for you 818. I must be asleep as I did not know there was a builder in Clovis. When does your car arrive? I would love to drop by and offer any assistance you want.

Hey Doug-
October 5th it should be done at F5. Then trying to figure out the logistics to get it here will hopefully be easy. I will be racing at COTA towards the end of October (gone a week), so I hope it is delivered before that by Stewart (or no delays). I have 90% of everything I need for the build. I just need the chassis and some time.
My Dad and some other race buddies are going to be all over this build. I'm sure after they see it, there will be more 818R's coming to Clovis, CA. haha.

Nice looking engine Chad, are you going to ditch the stock exhaust headers with those ugly metal heat shields and the heavy green injector protectors? Sexy engine wearing some shabby clothes... :-) You can give the alternator brackets a diet too... Craig (Mechie3) has done a nice setup for the right side with a simple turnbuckle and two rod ends.
Any idea re HP and TQ expectations?

Haha- Not sure why those Green Brackets of Death are on there. I asked them to just leave them off. I'll remove them and pretty up the Alt and brackets. Powerwise- Just 290-300/300TQ right now with Cobb tune is their guess. The small turbo is the reason. I'm just going to break it in, then do a turbo upgrade depending on what it feels like on the track.
As far as the headers, I'm researching that right now. Cant have those crap cans on there. Not sure what will fit, but I want equal length.

That should be a very tractable and reliable build.
Sell the stock header in pieces on Ebay... right now I've offset everything but about $60 from the cost of the ceramic coated header and up pipe I bought from AJW. It's truly amazing what you can squeeze out of the unused stock parts! I only have the cross over pipe left and had a nibble on it just yesterday!

Nice to know.
my goal is 350 rwhp in my head for some reason. However, I need to see how the trans will hold out. I race a 1900+ pound 911 with a 2.5L spitting out 211RWP/ 178 TQ.... I can't imagine 300RWHP/300 TQ in a lighter car WITH aerodynamics! Can wait.

So- the guy who had trouble understanding why the Subaru H-6 thread was to discuss how we could utilize that engine in the 818 and not a place to debate flat-4 turbo vs flat-6 or "turbo" vs "normally aspirated" may now "get it" ;)
With comparable exhaust headers, the Subaru flat-6 motors sound essentially identical to Porsche's flat-6's. The world is your oyster ;)
