Hi,

I stopped at the DMV headquarter in Albany, NY, and met with the guy who handles Kit Cars. Very helpful.

Apparently NYS requires a "padded dash".................

Any ideas in regards to padding the 818S dash? I was considering gluing a sheet of neoprene to the top.

Thanks for the input!

John

P.S. FWIW: Apparently NYS also requires "bumperettes", twin electric wipers and defroster...........

Flock it? No, not a euphemism for eff it, but a fuzzy non reflective surface that is applied to dashes to prevent light glare. It's a soft material and as long as they don't specify the thickness of the padding, it's technically padded.

I am considering covering mine with an thin foam pad then vinyl. That is for sure padded.

Thanks Guys,

I'm waiting for an "information packet" from NYS DMV that will go into the details.

I think that it will just say "padded dash". I don't think it will say "flock it", although I'd like to..... <LOL> Kind of silly with full seat belts. You ain't gonna hit the dash.

My game plan is "Do it right, do it once", even if its a bit more work. I want to pass first time. I had thought that "clip on" wipers were sufficient, but apparently that has changed. The "bumperettes" caught me by surprise though. I'll have to fab those up.

The material FFR supplies to cover the dash in the roadsters is padded. JoAnn's Fabric Stores carries padded material and head liner materials.

Thanks Doug,

What's the FFR material like? Vinyl with foam?

Much appreciated,
John

Yes, it was a black vinyl over a thin 1/8" foam.

Kind of stretching the meaning of "padded". Then again, most car dashes are pretty hard.

Thanks,
John

I think its those cone things Madonna used to wear..................

Actually, I believe that NYS wants some semblance of a bumper (nerf bar?). FFR has them for the Cobra kits. I'll edit this post when I get the info from NYS.

Us New Yorkers will probably have to fab up something to get through inspection.

I have the NYS DMV kit already, quite the packet. I spoke to the guy in charge of homebuilt cars. He was really busting chops until I said it was a FFR car, then he was pretty receptive. The feeling I get is that if you bring a well built that looks safe down to inspection, you'll be fine.

I'll do the minimum and then see what they catch.

I'll be adding tow hooks, so I can always fabricate bumperettes that thread into the hooks if I need to.
