View Full Version : Supercharged RS Engine?

Well, I have been looking around at donor cars. It looks like it may be easier to get a newer NA impreza with low miles that any WRX. Now, I think as a street driver, 165 HP NA engine would be pretty fun. Im sure with the shorter exhaust and a no power steering, and a few mods, it may even get up to 180 hp. Question is, I wonder if there would be room to fit a super charger kit later on. Something like this http://www.raptorsc.com.au/kits.php?id=20
they claim 30% increase so that's about 215 220 HP. I know that's only equal to a stock WRX, but still may be an option if someone could get a NA motor with low miles for a fair price. Rebuilding an engine is not cheap.
My major concern is how much the supercharge hangs off the side. Any ideas?

Its a lot of money.

Agreed, too much money. For that price you could source a JDM STI engine, or maybe even a USDM one. Not to mention most of the plumbing would need to be modified or discarded. However if you still wanted to supercharge a NA EJ, I suggest a custom intake manifold and a roots style charger. Could probably be done for pretty cheap, IMO $1000-$1500 including injectors and tuning. But that's only if you have the fab skills to fit and weld it.

That is a good point. I guess if I go NA to start ith, just getting a wrx motor would not be too much money if I want more power later on

God damn, the price is quite high! For only 30-45% increase. :(
With a turbo you'll get a lot more torque, more controllable, lower in RPM, for less the money.
But it depends what you prefer, if you are dead sold to SCs, then it's up to you.

I was just looking for options to add power to NA engines. After finding out foresters are viable donors ( I wonder if the door hardware is the same?) they can be had really cheaply. I would assume all that money goes into getting a tuned ECU, ect, but there are whole donor WRX's for less.

I have been meaning to start a supercharger thread on here just because I'm sure many people don't really know about the options out there and what people have done with Subarus in the past. May have to do that in the morning.

It will certainly be less money than the $4100 they want for their kit!

There are several kits available. I just ran across that one in a search. I would think that to be the top of the price range ( but I could be wrong)

Who in their right mind would spend that kind of money for those results?

well since i dont have the time to start a new thread today, check out the following link if your at all interested in supercharging a subaru. It does not have to be that expensive.

I think it's mostly a legacy (as in, older platform, not Subaru Legacy the car) product/mod path. Prior to 2001, the WRX wasn't available here, so people supercharged them. Nowadays, it's not done as often. People tend to swap in a WRX motor/harness instead if they want to stick with the GC chassis (98-01 2.5RS). For those that don't want to do that much work, they still supercharge.

Well that makes a bit more sense, thanks.

Rebuilding an engine at a machine shop isn't that expensive actually. Assuming the heads and block are in decent condition that is.

those are likely AUD so subtract 10% Not a terrible solution for someone who wants to make a bunch of bolt on power and torque 45% is a major boost.
back in the day before the wrx guys supercharging and turboing rs cars were just mulching gears with the torque they were making. If not for them gear development would not be where it is today.

If we get a tranny option to support 500+hp, I wonder if we'll see anyone twin charging the 818.
