View Full Version : Rear wing mounts
So as I've been finalizing my order, I was told that a chassis mount for the rear wing will not be included, nor will it be an option. As it stands, if you order the wing you have to bolt it to the rear deck lid unless you fabricate your own mount. Neither of those options are ideal to me. Does anyone have any ideas? I was hoping they would add the mount used on the 818R as an option for those of us that want the wing attached to the chassis. I'm tempted to cancel the wing until there is something available. Thoughts?

I was going to potentially mount my own wing to the trunk, but bolt a bracket to the underside that would contact the frame. That way, as downforce is generated, it transmits the load through the trunk, to the bracket, to the frame, not just onto the trunk through the hinges. Maybe have a matching bracket on the frame with a spring loaded pin to lock it in place and a small cable to release it when you want to open the trunk.

My plan is to make my own wing struts that protrude through the seam of the trunk and connect to the frame. That way, i can remove the wing and leave no traces as there's no external mounts.

I would get the car first and do your own mod.
there is no way I would mount to the lid, unless you buy extra lids
Some good ideas in here...I was hoping there would be something that FFR would provide as an option.

Hi GUNS,
I would consider the considerable forces that wings can generate at speed before bolting to a nonstructural body panel. Wouldn't want to be on America's Funniest Videos with a 818 rear deck taking flight while going down the highway.
Personally if I mount a wing (after the removable hardtop option is resolved) the wing will be have mounts bolted to the steel frame.

This is the wing used on the 818R and the GTM (special spacing between the mounts for Factory Five)
Cheers!
FFR-ADV,
Thanks for that link, looks like some great info. BTW, I have no intention of bolting the wing to the body panel which is why I'm asking about frame mounts.

Make your own mount, or make a template and I will make you one and mail it to you.

Didn't think you would GUNS. Many folks do underestimate the forces imparted by wings. There was a video (somewhere in the forum) of a WRX crashing on the track when its wing broke off. When you are counting on the downforce to hold you on the track its very serious and if one swaps ends the wing changes from downforce to uplift which is why NASCAR abandoned wings. I still think wings are of great benefit, but we need to be wary of the bad that comes with the good. Its all about trade-offs and why we will see so many variations in 818 builds.
The solution offered by metalmaker sounds great! I am looking forward to seeing this done and will follow it with great interest.
