So I have been lurking on the forums for years and finally took the plunge. I am in the Navy and haven't really been able to stay in one place long enough to allow me to build..but I have the time now.

Kit is scheduled to be delivered Friday..unfortunately that is the day I am going on vacation for 10 days..ugh

I started off by buying a donor 92 mustang GT and pulled the motor, transmission, and rear end and rebuilt them all.

Well this isn't starting off great. Delivery was supposed to be today but is delayed to tomorrow..during a tropical storm..right when Im supposed to be leaving on vacation. I had a friend that was supposed to accept it for me but he fell through...we will see how this goes...grrr..

Welcome!!!! Your doing a donor build, there are a few more parts from the donor that you'll be needing, keep the carcass..........

bbksv
06-06-2013, 08:54 PM
Carcass is gone. I traded it for over 2K in parts..and probably sold another 2000 off it..so I pretty much got the engine/trans/rear for free.

Tell us some about your proposed build.

bbksv
06-07-2013, 05:50 PM
Well here is a little about what I have been working on. I rebuilt the engine out of the 92 GT with GT40P heads, E303 camshaft, ford racing 1.6 roller rockers, and new keith black .30 over pistons. I decided to swap out the EFI for carb so I am running an Edelbrock performer RPM intake and a street demon carb.

I also rebuilt the transmission (first time trans build)...so we will have to see how that goes.

I will be running A/C and possibly power steering down the road.

Still looking for a good deal on some wheels and tires but I would like to run a 17/18 combo...we will see.

Just a little update. Since I was delayed on the front suspension (FF sent me 2 drivers side upper control arms).. I decided to tackle the rear suspension.

Question: Is it normal to have extra hardware left over? I have a tube and several nuts and bolts that really didn't seem to go anywhere?...19526

bbksv
07-07-2013, 06:55 PM
And another pic after I pulled it in the garage...the boyd tank is pretty sweet

On another note..I think I will have to get it on the wheels soon because after I put the rear end and gas tank in it was a bit too heavy and broke my rollers...

I had lots of spare hardware left on my build so far.

Its on the ground...wheels look good. Also have the engine mostly together..have a few things to fix. I broke a bolt off in the head for the valve cover and one of my intake bolts doesn't seem to line up..just keeps stripping out. Hopefully I can get the firewall done in the next couple days then the hard lines..so I can get the engine and transmission in. We will see..my wife is being induced tomorrow morning so I may have to take a little time off.20349203502035120352

Well it has been a little while since I updated this since I have had my hands full with a newborn. I was finally able to finish the engine and get both the engine and transmission in. Starting to look like a car.

After seeing Wallace18's 33 in person made me think I should do a '33 rather than an 818. Haven't made up my mind yet - have to get a ride from wallace18 and get him to give my wife one too. The top, A/C and trunk make me think the '33 is more practical for what I want to do.

Great seeing your progress! Look forward to seeing how it comes together.

Just figured I would update this thread since its is my build thread. I got the car started up and ended up getting water in the oil. I pulled the intake off and reinstalled..clearing up the water issue.

Anyways, here are a couple videos of the car idling after the last time

Well I finally finished installing my throttle cable and was testing it in the garage..when I decided to just roll it back and forth. I was planning on doing a bunch more before I actually drove it..but I couldn't resist..so I rolled it down the driveway and still couldn't resist..so I kept going down the street Actually couldn't go too far because I didnt have lights but there are pretty much no cars on my street so I went down a couple houses and there was a charger in front of me. I go down a couple more houses and turn around. Uh oh! Charger is a cop! lol...he didn't do anything and I went home and parked it in the garage :)

Here is kind of a crappy video but you get the idea :)

I read that you had an issue with your ebrake cables, as did all of us. I along with others had to extend the bracket downward to lower the cable attachment point. Hope this helps. Evan

Thanks...I think I mostly have the e brake figured out. I ended up just buying the lokar brake cable kit but then I ran into the problem of the block that connects the cables to the handle hitting the rear mount. So I just cut the rear brake mount and curled the bottom part of the bracket with a hammer..clears fine now.

Got the windshield installed and gauge panel. I am going to start working on the doors. I got the delrin bushings from Tim so I should have some feedback soon on those. Here are a few updated pix.

I test fit the hood and for some reason the hood looks a little shorter than everyone elses. Easy fix but kinda weird.

Well progress has been very slow since I work 70+ hours a week..however that should be changing soon so hopefully I can get moving. I got the drivers side door on but still can't get the latch to get that second click. I'm tired of messing with it right now so I am going to take a break and work on something else. Anyways..here are a couple pix of it outside. It was a gorgeous day.

I know these may be simple ideas and maybe you already know but here's some thoughts. As far as the hood being short, you're grille cant appears too vertical, canting it back will take up the hood fitment slack. I found that watching the door latch operate from the opposite side with a high powered flashlight revealed some issues I was unaware of. She's looking good and sounds good !!

bbksv
05-09-2014, 07:32 AM
Thanks Boz. I think the issue is actually the striker isn't far enough to the outside of the car still but I already have a nice oblong ugly hole for the striker. It is just frustrating.

Well I know it has been quite a while since I have updated this thread but I didn't get a lot of work done over the summer. It was hard to get motivated when it takes about 10 seconds in the garage to get completely soaked from the South Carolina heat.

It has finally cooled down and I am back at it. I took the body off to finish up most of the mechanical work and wiring. Almost done with the A/C install. The electric power steering is done and makes the ride SO much nicer..highly recommended. Anyways..here are a few pix of progress...

Billet A/C control installed.

33454

This is the color scheme I am thinking...dark blue metallic on the bottom and black on top..probably more gloss.

33455

New optima battery and holder.

33456

I ended up having to put the coolant reservoir on the drivers side firewall since the passenger side was taken up by the A/C bulkhead fitting.

33457

A/C condenser brackets fabricated (PITA) and mounted along with the fan shroud.

33458
33459

Installing the transmission tunnel and A/C evap

33460

Had to modify the fan shroud on the bottom so that it would clear the control arm bolts. I just used some angle stock.

33461

Headlights installed and headlight fluid filled :)

Great work! Did you fabricate the battery mount or was that available to purchase? I will put my battery in the trunk. Anything I cobble together will not look nearly that good. Thanks, Ray

bbksv
09-16-2014, 07:20 PM
I wish I fabricated it lol..I'm not that good yet. It was about 60 bucks on ebay..good piece and looks great.

Starting to fit up body panels to start doing body work. The hood fits like garbage. To get both the center to line up with the center of the grill and both half moons to line up there is almost a 7/8" gap on the passenger side.

Got the trunk hinges and trunk lid set up..it should fit much better than the hood..just need to set the gaps and raise the deck height a little bit.

Hey Bob, it's looking good. Your grill has some adjustment in the tilt forward and backward. I had to adjust mine and unfortunately had to replace my upper radiator hose due to the adjustment. You might be able to make up some of that gap.

bbksv
09-16-2014, 07:51 PM
Its not so much the adjustment forward and aft. To get the half moons and the center hump to line up it leaves a gap. I messed around with trimming the drivers side aft side to see if it would clear it up (and then I would just glass the front) with no look. It just looks like its twisted a couple degrees. It won't be too difficult to fiberglass the gaps..just something I don't want to deal with right now. I just want to get this driving :)

11-14-2014, 02:53 PM
Well I have been pretty bad about updating this thread. I keep the other forum more up to date since this place is more of a ghost town but I will catch up a little. Started to do the body work which has been fun (for some reason I enjoy it)..

Had some hood fitment issues that I have mostly straightened out. I also cut the nose cone in half and reglassed it for a better fit. Filled in some of the excessive gaps after I had adjusted the grill as much as I could.

The top of the doors also needed a bunch of work..which is ongoing but they are looking better.

I also got the wife to buy off on upgrading to EFI so I ordered the QFI stand alone EFI system and I am just waiting to take off the body to install that. Also ordered the digital guard dog IKEY RS system for a RFID/keyless push button remote start system.

I ended up ditching the trunk latch system in favor for mini latches in the corners. I will probably install some sort of e-lock on the trunk to wire up with the IKEY system.

Here are some pic of the door fixes. Even with the half moons lined up they still fit like crap so I had to modify a little.

Looking good Bob. I haven't updated my build lately either...probably because I haven't worked on it. I was thinking about using the Quik latches on the trunk too. I used them on the hood and they work good. I was wondering if you could post a picture of how you installed the bucket for the base of the quik latch. Thanks in advance Bob.

I will probably drill out the rivets and just use small button heads so I can have a little bit of adjustment.

There is enough room in the corners though. You could even trim the bucket a little and still run the gasket in the corner.

No problem.

I started to install rivnuts in the back of the waterfall area with the kit supplied tool...and realized after I installed one on the side that I couldn't unscrew the tool from the rivnut so I ended up cutting the damn tool off with a cut off wheel...ugh.

I did get to test fit the roof again and it fit great actually. I was kind of worried that with all the work on the doors and cowl that it wouldn't fit right..but nope..fits great. I could probably get away with just using the weather strip and calling it a day. I am just happy that I had 1 body part that actually fit good.

I think I have a couple weeks left till I will be ready for primer..if that (and if I can stay motivated)..then I can take off the body and get the fuel injection system and the RFID/ push start alarm installed. Can't wait to see the difference.

Np. Well I have had to slow down with the priming and all since it cooled down this last week here in SC. I still have plenty of priming and sanding to go but have the hood..chin and top mostly done. I am tinkering with some custom painting practice..and trying to figure out exactly how I am going to paint it. I kind of envy the guys who know early on "I am going to paint it XXX" and that's how it is. Not me...I change my mind on a daily basis.

Decided to get a hood and practice spraying a little. Mainly to make sure I can spray the blue metallic without tiger striping. The metallic laid out great with no striping or mottling so I think I can safely spray it without screwing it up. I will be practicing a lot more as my body work continues.

Anyways..here is the blue..not bad for doing it in my driveway

Well not a lot to update these days other than sanding and priming..and repeating. I am practicing painting and messing with some custom stuff with an airbrush which has been fun.

On another note..over all though it has been a good year. Not only have I had the opportunity to work on this car....I had a lot of time off to spend with the family before I go back out to sea. I got to (almost) finish my masters degree...and me and the wife both got in the best shape of our lives (I lost 20+ lbs) and both became beach body coaches.

Hope 2015 is just as good :)

Got a little work done on my center cosole..wanted to get it done before I pulled the body off again. The frame is done..now I will just stretch fleece over it and fiberglass it. Ended up building it in 2 separate pieces so I can get it in and out easier.

Hi Bob,

I like what you did for the console, I'm probably going to do something similar. It will be a great place to mount the radio and a few other items. Are you using the stock mufflers? They certainly look nice but I was not sure how loud they were. For me, I would like to be able to have a conversation when going down the road.

01-04-2015, 12:22 PM
I am using the stock mufflers for now...but will switch them out in the future. Right now the wife is starting to get irritated with how much I am spending since I passed my budget 13k ago if you don't count the car trailer I just ordered :D

It was either make this one the way I want it or go out and drop 70k on a new vette or something so she let me get away with it haha. (I will probably still go get the vette..she just doesn't know it yet) :D

I got the body back off and started the install of the EFI system. Missing a couple fittings so I am on hold on that. In the mean time I started the subwoofer install behind the drivers seat. I will be building a fiberglass box and it will have about .5 cubic feet. Here is the start of the box.

On another note.....one of the reasonsI did this build was to learn along the way on every part of car building to include machining. I have been looking for a lathe and a mill for a long time and finally came across a little atlas 618 on craigslist and traded him an old guitar and amp. This guy had no idea what he had because I got a TON of stuff with it..on the order of 10x what my trade was worth! I also got a bunch of books and a couple hundred machining and miniature engine building magazines (worth over 1300 themselves)...so needless to say I am pretty stoked :)

Anyways...sorry about the tangent :)

One step forward..2 steps back. I got the EFI system installed along with a new MSD distributor..ran great but then I noticed some sparking from the wire going from the coil to the distributor. I disconnected the wire and reconnected it..and now the car won't start. Gotta look into some ignition stuff I guess.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y532/bbkkssv/Mobile%20Uploads/20150115_153609_zpsedsbsdwr.jpg

Moving forward..finally. Had a few issues on the ignition front. The coil to dist wire was faulty so I replaced that and it was still starting really rough. I found a couple of the spark plug boots were completely melted and causing arcing/not firing cylinders. I think the EFI was sensing that extra fuel with the wideband and trying to lean it out which obviously didn't work. So..I am rebuilding all the wires with high temp boots and I also got the ford racing headers that are meant for my gt40p heads..I had to have them (atleast thats what I told the wife lol)

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y532/bbkkssv/Mobile%20Uploads/20150122_170547_zpsgqrgrbz0.jpg

Also got all the A/C plumbing done but somehow was missing 1 fitting so I have to wait to charge the system.

A little more work done on the subwoofer box. Endedup being .43 cubic feet so I think that will be perfect for a nice little 8" sub right behind the seat.

The hotrod on the trailer going to get the VIN verified. So..basically the DMV not knowing what the heck they are doing worked out in my favor and I was able to get it registered today with plates in hand. (They are no supposed to be able to register it there..state is required to do it)...oh well. Time to do some cruising before blowing it apart for paint :)

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y532/bbkkssv/Mobile%20Uploads/20150227_120825_zpstlakldhv.jpg

Also finished the sub box.

http://i1279.photobucket.com/albums/y532/bbkkssv/Mobile%20Uploads/20150226_102720_zpse1knfihx.jpg

Thanks, Nevin. First shakedown went pretty well..put maybe 10 miles on it. The EFI system definitely needs to do some more learning. My turn signals were also acting a little weird too. Otherwise..nothing big found yet. Oh...one thing I would recommend is to put a switch for the power steering for anyone using the unisteer unit. It was pretty squirrely when I was up to highway speeds.

erlihemi
03-02-2015, 09:20 PM
Bob, Is "twitchy" unisteer common? you don't seem surprised. how much caster are you using? Maybe the bow planes just need a little trimming on the feedback synchros??;)

Arrowhead
03-03-2015, 08:07 AM
With the power steering you can run a lot more caster (like 6-7 degrees) so it will be a lot more stable on the highway.

bbksv
03-03-2015, 09:31 AM
I have heard of a few people saying the same thing. I do have about 6-7 degrees of caster though. I still have a bunch of dialing in to do so we will see.

Well I have a good chunk of miles on it now and I have been banging my head trying to get it tuned. The Quick Fuel EFI system is supposed to be mostly self learning but out of the box is NOT set up to run well. I was having huge bucking issues at WOT and realized that in the VE tables from the factory were all messed up. They had entire rows zeroed out for 400 RPM gaps..so when I hit those RPM's it was like hitting a brick wall...and there was no way it could have self learned that out when it couldn't get above 3200 RPM. Anyways..got that fixed and now it is running great. Hopefully get back in to the body work this week

03-26-2015, 05:01 PM
Well been on and off working on the car..I am in the Navy and moving to CT before too long so I have been house hunting..got that taken care of so now the car is blown apart again. All the panels are starting to come together and finally got the main body primed. I see I still have a little filling to do here and there but over all it isn't bad at all. I have to say when I first started doing the body work I was using slick sand...I started using TAMCO 2k high build primer and that stuff really is awesome. High build and sands much easier than slick sand..and it is already a 2k so you can just thin it out and use it as a sealer.

Holy cow, that's a lot of fan for that small a space. Puts some more 2x4's up to support the plastic and switch to a couple of "disposable" window fans from Walmart. Then consider pushing the air in through heat pump filters instead of sucking it in (you may already be set up like that, I can't tell.. Better for dust control. Not how I did mine, but how I would the next time. :-)

bbksv
04-28-2015, 06:38 PM
I thought about that and I just cant see blowing a fan right on my work...even though it might keep dust out better. The space is about 16x13x8...and based on the CFM rating of the fan on max it exchanges all the air like 5x a min but there is no breeze or anything. I have a 4x8 intake filter using tacky 20x20 paint booth filters. Maybe I will just try to turn it down a little and make sure it is sealed better. I do have 2x2's and 2x4's supporting everything for the most part..it is pretty rigid though.

I think the big thing is I didn't wet the floor....we will see what round 2 brings tomorrow...

04-28-2015, 08:02 PM

Bob,

I have really enjoyed watching your build progress. What a beautiful car!
One question please. You never mentioned the application of anything like Lizard Skin to control heat and noise. Did you use Lizard skin?
If not, can you comment on heat and noise issues. I did see that you used Dynomat. I am at the point now and must make a decision soon.

I actually used several things. On the bottom I used a DEI thermal barrier right over the mufflers. I also applied a paint containing ceramic on both sides of the aluminum. Then I applied Lizard skin on the inside..in addition to Cool-it by thermo tec on the inside..no heat problems whatsoever.
