View Full Version : Transmission work (LSD Install) in New England...AJW or other supporting vendor?

Does anyone have any recommendations for transmission work in New England? I was thinking that even if I weren't going to install a LSD, it might be good to just have the tranny case cracked open and see how everything looks. I like many of you didn't have the chance to evaluate if everything was working well (based on how the rest of my donor was treated, I can image some synchro wear and concerned about the whole gearset...) and if possible would much rather have it tip-top when I drop it in. Not that pulling it after would be a big deal, but how frustrating would it be to find out third gear is toast on your first drive? I imagine finding a 5MT with a LSD already installed would be pretty rare, so that's probably not a good option for sourcing one, so potentially if we already have a vendor that does subaru transmission work they could offer a couple LSD options and a reasonable price for installing it and taking a quick look at the gearset while they're in there. I wonder if there potentially be a market for a core exchange program too...

i do a lot of Transmission work. no i'm not a vendor, but could entertain the though of getting vendor status, if the demand was high enough.

+1 on the concerns and peace of mind if you've been able to see the guts. The following pictures are from my transmission yesterday. Done by Aamco in Humble TX (no help to you, I know) with me as the willing apprentice!
I was really pleased at the overall condition. The diff carrier bearings had some "early onset" pitting and had some grit in them from open seals on the output shafts. They and oil seals were obviously replaced.

What kind of labor charge is normaly involved in checking out a trans. (already opened), and installing new diff./setting correct lash?

Thanks metal, I've heard only good things about WI, nice to know they do tranny work as well. I'm still deciding on a LSD and scraping cash together, so I probably won't be taking care of it soon.
freds, nice to see you scored a well cared for gearbox! Can I ask how much you paid for the service? I've seen numbers like $1k thrown around for an install, but I imagine that's with dropping the tranny, etc.

If the transmission comes in as a separate unit and is clean...$250 to $300 for the labor. It might be a bit more if some of the gears have to be replaced as that requires further dismantling and resetting the pinion position.
That does not include any parts, but does include installing an LSD, if provided.
Sorry I took so long posting this.
