    Mark II Clutch Switch Replacement

    Hi all,

My Mark II is about 22 years old, and the clutch switch has become a bit of a problem. Sometimes I have to find the sweet spot before she'll turn over. I searched the forum for a while but cannot find out how to replace the switch. I've used a mirror to see how it attaches but cannot find anything and it is tight up there. A friend, no longer with us, originally built the car so I am unsure how it mounts. The switch is the type that has a long white nylon/plastic plunger. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your MKII most likely was built using a Mustang Fox body pedal box and support. If so I would refer you to a repair manual for a 87-90 Mustang. Most shop manuals cover the step by step repair of the clutch switch. You can also check to see if there are YouTube videos that cover this repair. It is a tight squeeze and you need to be somewhat of a contortionist to get in there. I removed my driver’s seat and found that added some additional room for access. Good luck.
    Best regards, Flip

That is unfortunate, I do not think you can replace it with the body on?? It is mounted on the left side of the pedal box, near the top.

    Can’t you just bypass it?

Late Model Restoration (LMR) has a video showing how to replace the switch on a stock mustang. Look for 1986-2004 Mustang Clutch Pedal Saftey Switch Replacement on YouTube. Maybe this will help to see what you have and what it would take to replace or repair yours? Tight spot but I think it is possible.

I removed mine (from an '88 GT) on our Mark I/II while the body was off for paint. Never looked back.
The 55 Ford and 69 Bugeye Sprite did not have one. Not sure if the '66 Mustang had one either.
After 103,000 miles, I and all those who have driven MARIAH have not missed it.
    Good Luck getting to it.
Glad you are enjoying your Mark II.

MKII, it’s tight, but I’ve been able to snake it out of the connector.

I just took mine out of an old Mark 1 build. I couldn't even remove it due to the aluminum side body piece. I ended up breaking off the plastic housing and bypassing the wires. The previous owner had looped in another push button "safety " switch under the dash that needs to be pressed to start the car (same wires) so I left that and deleted the clutch switch. I was raised and taught to always push the clutch in and verify neutral on any standard trans car so it's not an issue for me. most of the issue with getting it off and back on surrounds the post its mounted to. If you havent made a top acess panel above your clutch quadrant/steering compartment you should consider it, made it much easier to mess with stuff under there. I b cut out the panel with a hard wheel then mounted a new cover with riv-nuts and a new foam seal.
