Hey everyone - Mark Maybury just went 230.671 MPH in his Type 65 Coupe at the Loring Timing Association mile and a half making it the fastest Factory Five Coupe on record.
He told us about someone named Monti Gatti w/John Paxson driving that supposedly hit 237+ MPH in a Daytona Coupe at Bonneville back in the ’90s… but I can’t find any official record!
Does anyone know if Mark’s run makes his Coupe the fastest Daytona Coupe in the world?
In picture #2 Monty Gatti manufactured Cobras at his company Contemporary Classic Motor Car Company and successfully raced a Cobra at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Monty passed in CT in 2011.
The Daytona Coupe in that picture was listed on ebay (out of FL) about a year ago with some history. #206 is a dedicated Salt Flats race car with extended wheelbase and a SBF incorporating a very radical intake system.
The car is beautiful, I considered bidding on it and collected several photos that I must have deleted.
John Paxson has driven numerous cars at Bonneville including a rocket car that recorded 360MPH. He test drove "ultimate speed" cars to 500MPH that eventually went over 750MPH.
