Digital Car painter APP for iPhone and iPad

About 8 months ago I was sitting around one Friday afternoon pondering what colour(s) I might paint the FFR 33 Hot Rod I am planning to build when it suddenly occured to me that "There's an App for that!". So I jumped onto my then new iPad and began searching for it. After three days of digging about in the App store and on the internet using every search term I could think of the conclusion was that in fact there was NOT an App for that.

Realizing this, and having worked in computers in a former life I set about plugging this obvious hole in the App market. With this note I am happy to report that as of today the Apple App store now includes the "Digital Car Paint" App that allows you to select a photo of your car or one similar to it and digitally paint it with Dupont Hot Hues hot rod colours. In addition the App allows you to design a two tone or multi tone paint scheme if you so desire.

The App is a free download and the free version provides full access to the drawing tools and colour pallet, but if you want to save your work, gain access to the paint codes and colour names, E-mail your work, or post it to your face book page you will have to buy the App for the grand sum of $5.99. Note Due to a technical glitch if you act quickly the upgrade price is .99 cents!

We will in the forseeable future have an Android version as well as a version that will run on the web and all versions will work the same way and have the same price.

So, if you have been trying to figure out what colours to paint your project, and have an Apple smart phone or iPad, (or a friend with one) by all means feel free to download a free copy of the App and play with it to your hearts content.

If you do down load it let us know your impressions and if you have suggestions for improvements let us know about them as well. Digital Car Paint will be an ever improving tool and all input into its evolution is welcome.

The App can be found by entering "Digital Car paint" in the App store search box and it works on both the iPhone and the iPad

Purchased it, bypassed the tutorial to play with it - but how do you revisit the Apps' instructions (need to learn the auto fill for stripes). Looks good though!

Iphone 101 - Took me a while to figure this out.

To get back to the tutorial, double press the button on the bottom of you phones screen.

The screen will move up to reveal all programs that are running in background.

Tap and hold on any app in the new display until they all start to shake and show the red minus sign.

Tap on the red minus sign on the app(s) you want to close.

Now tap the start button at the bottom of the screen again to go back to normal operation.

Now when you select Digicarpaint APP it will launch from the beginning thus allowing you to choose Tutorial or Start.

OR just turn the i-Phone completely off by pushing and holding the button on the top right until Poweroff slider shows and then restart it by pushing the same button again once it is completely shut down.

As this was built over the winter I had to use images that I was able to locate on-line and within acceptable copywrite boundaries. Once the car show season hits up here in the great white north I will be scouring the shows for better images which will come available as a free update.

If any of you have images that you would like to offer for use in the App you can send them to admin@digitalcarpainter.com we are interested in all manner of vehicles, not just Factory Five cars.

In a perfect world images sent will be taken with a polarizing filter to eliminate as much reflection as possible and have the following characteristics.

1 - Be a front 3/4 view that shows the front and one side of the car
2 - Be taken from a slightly elevated position relative to the drivers seat (ie Standing height) so as to allow the APP user to lay out stripes on the hood etc.
3 - Be taken with a 8 megapixel or better camera set to the highest possible resolution.
4 - The car will fill as much of the frame as possible
5 - Car will be free of major shadows (ie No human shaped shadows on the car etc.)
6 - Free of any signs on the windows etc.
7 - Be critically sharp images
8 - In a perfect world the car will be on Pavement. (grass settings make the tires an interesting challenge when we drop the image on a white background)

Thanks in advance for any and all images that may be forthcoming.
