Gen 1 Coyote over run question
G'day guys,
I have a gen 1 Coyote crate engine circa 2011. Imported it from Mike Forte. It is fitted with the following:
- Standard PCM, with relatively mild level tune from Lund.
- Treadstone air straightener .
- Spectre air intake.
- K&N filter.
- High flow cats.
- FFR stainless side pipes.
- Mallory pressure regulator with dash mounted fuel pressure gauge. Set to Lund spec 60psi.
On deceleration there is a large amount of pop and crackle. It has always been like this, even before tunes were uploaded. Whilst most would agree that it sounds pretty cool, me included, it is loud and can get a bit much on a long drive in the hills. I am also concerned if there might be something wrong that I have done that could lead to engine damage.
So my questions are thus;
- Do others get lots of decel popping?
- Did I do something wrong when fitting up the engine?
Also, can you guys send us some sun? It has been a cold, wet winter with no car fun.
Cheers,
Nigel

I am running a Gen 1 also, no cats, open 4" air intake tube, Lund tune, F5 headers and pipes. I do get some popping on decel, after higher than normal cruise rpm and long decel coast. Everything sounds clean on granny driving, decel.
I am surprised you get much popping with cats. Just guessing the popping is probably caused by collection of unburned gasoline being ignited in the pipes.
I would mention this to Lund, if they cannot address it in the tune, maybe they can give insight to causes.
good luck,

Although not a Coyote, my 4.6L DOHC engine with CATs did the same thing. I never determined what the cause was. Suggestions were an exhaust leak or the need to retard the closed throttle timing a bit. Never caused a problem for the engine, always ran strong. I keep in contact with the new owner, no issues for him either. The build has about 15K miles on it now on an engine that had 38K miles on it to start with.
MK4 base kit, 2004 Mach 1 donor, 4.6L DOHC, TR-3650 5-speed, narrowed stock axle with 3.55 gears and TruTrac, PS, PB, ABS, 17" Halibrand replica wheels, started 12/2011, registered 9/2014, sold 3/1/2018.
1970 Mustang Fastback Coyote powered Boss 302 tribute. Started 10/14/16.
Gen 3 Coupe Base Kit non-donor build. Ordered 4/5/2024 to be received August 2024.

It is caused by raw fuel entering the exhaust and lighting off. Won't hurt the engine, but will damage the mufflers. You need to take a look at your closed throttle fuel cut.

Run the engine at idle. With your hand go over every inch of the exhaust system from the headers down to the side pipes. If you feel heated air blowing on your hand you found a leak which will 100% cause snap, crackle & pop.
There are other causes so you need to eliminate this as a potential - That said its not that uncommon an issue.

I have a Gen1 Coyote using a ford control pack tuned by Lund with a Cobrajet intake manifold, VMP 67mm TB, and Comp stage 3 cams. Then FFR SS Headers and Gas N Pipe SS side pipes. I don't get a lot on just deceleration but its pretty poppy on downshifts.

I would be happy to send you some Florida sun. What is your address?

I dont know how Lund set up their tunes but a lot of tuners like to get rid of decel fuel cut, which will cause popping even if everything else is perfect
