Whibty | Air Leak Master Cylinder

All,
We've identified the Master Cylinder air leak...its the barb going into the Master Cylinder...the fit is not tight.

Below is a video on how loose the connection is for the barb fitting...

The other side of the barb is smaller...

I had four different folks look at it today...

They all said pretty much the same thing...it’s not snug...

Then it is not the correct fitting for that master cylinder.

When you say air leak, what do you mean? There is no pressure/suction on the reservoir side of the system, only gravity feed to the MC. It sounds like it's a snug fit. Is it leaking fluid?

Fluid is leaking where the barbs go into the master cylinder, and at the same time, it looks like air is entering into the system.

1) I believe a bigger barb is needed
2) A larger gasket for the master cylinder
3) A different Master Cylinder where I create a closed system

I don't know what other Master Cylinder will work with this setup

The 94/95 Mustang GT master cylinder bolts right up to the power brake booster that you have. The fittings to convert it to a remote reservoir are from a Mercury Villager. Lodestone billet works makes very nice aluminum ones. They are $15 for the pair. Measure the outside diameter of your current barbed fittings and I will compare that to the ones I made. It could be that the adapters are all you need.

Spoke with Loadstone Billet

--The inside diameter rubber gasket from Whitby is 13.28mm the Loadstone Billet conversion reservoir ports are 14.78mm.

--Ordered 2, should be here by the end of the week

That will solve your problem. The outside diameter of my homemade fittings is 16.1 mm. I managed to make that fit. You should have no problem getting them installed. No way they are going to leak.

I am pretty sure you are just mocking up. But just in case. You are going to put a grommet in the firewall to protect the hoses? Not sure how you are going to get it to seal. Don't forget fire-wall is a literal term.

I think you were commenting on Toadster's setup. I am also concerned about the lines feeding the master cylinder. I am pretty sure Earl's super stock hose is not compatible with brake fluid. The lining could dissolve and contaminate the brake system. Please double check this.

good points guys! the local race shop suggested the Earl's line for this setup - but I probably should use EPDM hose...

also found a good split grommet that I can use to fully seal the space, was already in plan

I grabbed a set of those billet ends for the master cylinder as well - I've not been a fan of the plastic ones

Your local auto supply store might even have it in stock. Mine did in bulk format for sale by the foot.

You'll need a 1/8 NPT male fitting to whatever you're going to connect to: example: 1/8 NPT male to 3/8 barb

NO NO NO do not use hydraulic hose with brake fluid. The EPDM air hose is good to use with brake fluid. It will not degrade.

Yes, most air hose is made using EPDM, it won't degrade from brake fluid. I have had it on my brake system for over 4 yrs, no trouble. I bought mine at Lowe's

Thanks Rich for clarifying that. I was pretty sure the Earls Super Stock hose would degrade. It is rated for engine oil, coolant and transmission oil. Still don't see the need for a 200psi rated air hose when there are purpose built remote reservoir brake fluid hoses that are lighter and cheaper available from multiple sources. It is overkill but should work.

I didn't buy it because it was 200psi hose, I bought it because it was EPDM, was local and easy to get, and way less than having to order it.

agreed, it's a gravity feed so pressure isn't a concern here... it's the chemical containment

I live in farming and ranch country. Maybe that’s why the auto supply stores carry a wide variety of hose types in bulk. Bought it by the foot. Think it cost me $10 Canadian for what I needed. That is about $7.95 for you guys��.
