Which tire size?

I want to know my options in regard to tire size for my MK4. Here is how Im building her. I went with the 2015 IRS rear, FFR’s 15” wheel with Gordon Levy’s brakes. I want to purchase Avon tires but not sure if the 295’s will work out back? I know Duke went with the 245’s and they look great, just wanted to see if the 295 would fit as I would like as much of a flush look as I can get. They also have the 275’s which are right in between. I’m going for the “Billboard” look and will be adding the lettering to my tires via paint stencil.

Any thoughts?...... opinions? Photos of cars that have a similar setup?

295/50 will work fine out back. I like running a 225/60 up front to match the rear height.

Hey Gordon....... the 295/50R15 has a height of 26.7, the 225/65R15 has the same 26.7. The 60 is only 25.7. I know you said matching height, looks like 65 matches not the 60?

what I meant is I don't like to see the front tire taller than the rear. The 245/60 and the 235/60 both look taller than the 295/50

I have an Mk1 and I’m running 295/50/15 on the rear with no issues. (Rubbing) Finding 275/50/15 was difficult.
I’ve got the standard 8.8 solid axle.

Avon sells the 275/50/15...... might go that route to bring it in that extra inch. The 295 is about an inch wider than the 275.

I'm going with the 2015 IRS as well, but know from the forum that the standard Mustang brakes won't work with the 15" wheels. Looks like the Gordon Levy brakes will. How are they different?

My kit is a custom Wilwood 4 piston system we developed for the 2016 IRS. It's can be used with a hydraulic park brake or out custom designed pinion park brake.

Avon 225/60R15 & 245/60R15 for reference. Actually picking it back up tomorrow (pending weather). Currently getting ceramic Opti-coat on it.

Why would you want to run less than the widest rear tire possible?

Sometimes too wide is too much. It’s about appearance too. Some cars too wide a rear tire creates increased understeer. Not that I’ll be racing, but too me it’s about what looks good. Don’t get me wrong I like a fat back tire and 295’s do look good. But overall since I can’t keep switching I’ll go with what I think works for me. It might be a 275, but you have to admit.....Duke’s car sure sits pretty!
