Just getting started on my roadster build, and have a million questions....

I'm using a 1996 mustang GT donor car with a 4.6 motor. Can I use aftermarket BBK shorty headers 16150 with the J pipe that comes with the basic kit? Will these headers interfere with steering shaft? Do I have to use the headers that Factory Five sells.

Can I use the stock oil pan, or is the canton short pan required?

I'm still dismantling the mustang. This is going to be a long, long project. Thanks for your input.

I'm making good progress dismantling my mustang. I've removed most of the wiring harness, steering column, PCM, steering rack, and assorted bits and pieces. Still left are the big things: engine, transmission, front suspension, gas tank and differential. I'm hoping to get the engine out next weekend. My plan is to disassemble the motor 4.6, examine the parts, and reassemble it using a shortblock kit with rings, bearings, maybe pistons, timing chain and gears, oil and water pumps, and maybe a clutch. I'll probably bring the heads to a machine shop for examination.

But I still haven't figured out whether I can use BBK shorty headers. I believe the basic roadster kit comes with a J pipe which goes between the exhaust manifold and the side pipes. I would prefer to use BBK Shorties, but wonder if they will get in the way of the steering shaft. Anyone out there know if the shorties can be used, or do I have to use stock/cast exhaust manifolds with the J pipe, or the factory five one piece header sold on their website?

Also, will the build work with the stock oil pan, or is the low profile oil pan required.

Thanks for any input you have to offer.

Yes you can use the BBK shorties and a better pan in a good idea but not required.

Hey Guys! BBK Shorty headers can be used with the 4.6L as long as they are unequal length headers.
We highly recommend a low profile pan, due to the fact that the stock pan hangs below the 4 inch frame.

Let me know if you have any other questions

Thanks to you and Courtney and Factory Five for your input. I'll definitely order a shallow oil pan; and I think I'll order the KBB headers, rather than use stock cast headers. I've got a ways to go before I'll need them, but I'm glad you guys cleared this up for me.
