Dimensions of subie tranny behind the axles

Hi guys,

I'm not going to be using the subie transaxle so I was wondering if someone with one lying around would be so and measure it for me? I'm playing with the idea of fitting either a boxter or a sequential tranny in there. The measurement I need is how much space there is behind the center of the axles, at the tranny flange to the end of the tranny.

Transmission mounting surface to the body (my body isn't on so I am eyeballing based on stock transmission shift bracket to body reported clearance issues. You likely have a little bit more space) is roughly 30-1/2". The axles are 6 to 6-1/2" back from the flange with the axles leaving the transmission closer to 6-1/2" and reaching the wheels 6" back. The axles angle forward as they go to the wheels. So figure 5-1/2" to 6-1/2" a safe range for axle shafts aft of the transmission mounting plate. The body of the Subaru transmission is about 26-1/2." The remaining 4" being space for the shift linkage stuff. I hope that helps your planning.

If you're going to use a boxster tranny, why not throw in the Porsche flat-6 too?

Thanks Goldwing! I think that should do it. I didn't realize they were that long.

Like someone said in Eric's 818e thread, unfortunately mine will sound like a big sewing machine. Maybe I'll pull a BMW trick and use the stereo so I can hear an engine sound from inside the car. Actually I'm the one that originally wanted to put a VR6 in there to make it sound better. What I'm going for now is sub-11 s 1/4 mile on batteries. More details soon.
