Wilwood rear brake kit fitment issue

    All,

I ordered and received the Wilwood 12"F/12"R brake kit from FFR. There is no problem with the fitment of the front kit, but I am having two problems with the rear kit fitment.

    1) The holes on the rear caliper mounting brackets do not match the holes on the spindles
    2) The hat doesn't fit over the parking brake shoes even when they are adjusted to minimum diameter

I am guessing that the problem is going to turn out that the rear spindles I have are not compatible, but I am hoping someone can tell me that with some authority. Maybe someone can provide a measurement of the spacing on the caliper mounting holes of their rear spindles. Maybe I am completely missing something! OK, get ready for the detailed presentation of the problem...

The spacing of the holes in the rear spindles is about 4.5". The spacing of the two sets of holes in the included Wilwood bracket (P/N 250-6982) are at least an inch wider than the holes in the spindles...

In regard to the rear hat not fitting, the wheel bolt pattern and the hat line up just fine...

...but the hat doesn't fit over the parking brake shoes...

...even when the parking brake is adjusted to minimum diameter.

I bought the set of front and rear spindles separate from a full donor car, so I am told they are from an '04 STi. I cannot be certain, and maybe that is where this fitment problem originates. I was under the impression that the '04 STi spindles were the same as the '04 WRX as they have the same bolt pattern that year. Please feel free to ask any other questions about this problem. I'm also soliciting both hard evidence and/or theories about what is wrong.

    Thanks for viewing!

(Dont' worry. I will clean up the spindles once I know they will work!)

I know the 04 rear spindles have bigger bearings and bigger axles. Maybe there is more difference too. My STI calipers from an 08 did not fit. Same as you. Wrong bolt pattern. Check with member 508WRX. He had some fitment issues on the rear as we'll. his spindles were stock 02 I think.

It sounds like the wilwood kit you ordered is for 02-05 WRX. Is that correct?

02-05 WRX have floating calipers and use a different wider spacing than the fixed caliper models. That's why the bracket doesn't line up.

STI's use a 190mm parking brake vs. the WRX's 170mm. That's why the rotor won't fit. You need 02-05 WRX knuckles or STI specific brackets and rotors.

    Rori,

Your answer sounds like what I was expecting. Thanks for including pertinent details to back it up. I guess I am looking for '02-'05 WRX knuckles. I'm sure that is the cheaper solution in this case.

The Wilwoods I received (12/12.2) say, for the rears, 99-04 WRX, not 02-05 and not even NA.

    1999 - 2004 SUBARU IMPREZA WRX
    PART NUMBER GROUP 140-7006

But the listing says, for all:

    Subaru Impreza:

1999-2000, all with Rear Disc Brakes
    2001, 2.2L and 2.4L, all
2002-2007 Coupe, all with Rear Disc Brakes
2002-2007 Wagon, all with Rear Disc Brakes
    WRX:
    2002-2003 WRX, all
    2004-2005 WRX, all except STI

    Frank,

The important part for me is the 2004-2005 WRX except STi. The hubs I have must indeed be '04 STi as they don't fit. I'll find some suitable hubs locally. Thanks again for the added detail.

Ha! Tricky part of the description that is.

So it's the STI thing that causes you the issue.
Hope you can fix it soon.

Mike. I was able to get mine to fit by driling a new hole for the caliper. thats the least of your problems though. The rear STI spindles require custom axles. I had mine made by The Drive shaft shop. They are nice but cost me $900.00 Wont make that mistake agian.

My donor had newer WRX knuckles and the holes were about .75" to narrow for the bracket as shown here

So off to the Junkyard to source 2 new read spindles/knuckles. Next issue required trimming to allow the caliper to get close enough to the spindle
