power steering pump squeal at full lock - coyote with KRC pump

when I turn my steering wheel full lock, I get a squeal - maybe from the KRC power steering pump, belt, or maybe even rubbing against my elephant ears which aren't fully attached in go-kart mode

To tighten the pulley, I have done the following:

1. loosen the upper mount bolt, I've found that loosening this allows for rotation
2. loosen the lower bolt, this is the pivot bolt to pull to the passenger side to create more tension
3. as I hold tension, I tighten both bolts, but the pulley gets in the way a bit

what is the best way to create tension on this non-tensioner pulley setup?

I had the same thing happen with mine, it was not the belt being loose though. I reached out to KRC and they said it sometimes happens. I changed the pressure release valve to a #4 from KRC, not for the squealing, just had read on the forum that it made the power steering better, i.e. less "twitchy" (thanks Paul) on the highway, which I believe it does. A nice side benefit (perhaps) is that the squealing instantly went away. Did nothing else (other than checking the belt which was tight) but that... FWIW.

I already have the #4 valve installed, I need to watch/listen better - I'm wondering if it is possibly the tires rubbing the elephant ears... getting used to the # of turns on the wheel to better guestimate when the end is coming :)

Switched to Genuine Honda power steering fluid and the whining from the pump went away. Haven't used anything else, in customer cars, since.

Have always used OEM Honda for our minivans, and this makes me feel better.

I also tell all my kids as I teach them to drive...turn to max and back off to decrease the stress on the pump. Maybe I am just old.

I'm running v-belts and as you know Todd, I struggled with the same thing. Once I "really" tightened the belt, it went away. Don't be afraid stretch it!

I had an employee that whined constantly. I gave him a bottle of this. The whining continued, but he went away.

yup using that as well!!

Autocrossing my FFR in hot weather I would lose assist maybe 3/4 through a run. I switched to Honda fluid (from a dealer not a 'OK for Honda' generic from a parts store) which 95% solved the problem. Great stuff.

agreed, using the real deal stuff here too... will drive it a bit more to get an idea if it's the pump, need to pull off the elephant ears or at least tie them back for now

NO, it's not funny. You are placing MAX load and pressure on the pump when at full wheel lock.

totally agree with you, but it happens if I bump off the end, not holding it at max
