Wiper Arm Adjustment

Hoping someone can help me with my wiper arms. I put the wiper arms on, and I need to adjust the "at rest" position. Is there an easy way to get the arm sockets disengaged from the gear? I tried pulling the little tab out, but nothing will budge and I don't want to bend or break anything.

And I'm also thinking that when the arm sockets are fully seated, the tab should lock below the shoulder of the gear, correct? (Where I have the awl pointed.)

Note: I read a separate post about a special tool that could help, but I'm hoping that there is another way with the tools I already have.

The wiper arms are not full engaged on the splined shaft. You can see they have gone on a little skewed. They should slide right off. Lift the wiper arm so that the wiper is not on the windshield. Push down a little on the hinge point while pulling up on the part that fits over the shaft. Cautiously wiggle the hinge point if they don't slide off initially.
To instal try putting more pressure on the hinge point as they slide on. The arms and the splined shaft are dissimilar metals so, a little anti seize will make them easier to remove in the future.

Some folks have used heat to increase the angle of the dog leg on the wiper blade. It takes a torch; a heat gun is not sufficient. According to reports, the soot just wipes off, so there's not a lot of finish work after. If you go this route, you can't be bashful; the blade doesn't have to be glowing, but it'll definitely take more heat than you expect. I lost my nerve & decided to live with the slight upward angle of the wiper blade.

Remove them from the car and remove the wiper and then place them in a vice with aluminum jaws. Then bend them a little and refit. Go a little at a time and you can get them to fit perfectly. Make sure before pushing them on all the way to cycle he wipers and let them park themself. You’ll find you will need to adjust them a few splines to get them in the perfect position.
