Wilwood Brake Problem

Rate this Entry
I need help concerning installation of the rear brakes for a ’33 Hot Rod. I purchased the Moser rear end and the Wilwood brake upgrade from Factory Five. All the brackets and the rotors were installed according to the Wilwood instructions but the calipers cannot be installed – the disc is too far off center. Note in the photo below that the caliper will not line up with the bracket stud. The Wilwood instructions call for installing two spacers when installing the bracket and then adding or removing spacers to get the disc centered in the caliper. This photo was taken with no spacers installed and I still couldn’t get the calipers installed.

The Wilwood bracket is designed such that if it is mounted in reverse orientation (and switch to the other side of the car) I can gain about 1/16 inch which on the driver’s side of the car was just enough to get the caliper to fit without any interference but still not centered perfectly. The passenger side of the car was too far off and this modification from the procedures was not enough to get the caliper installed.

This seemed odd so I measured the distance between the axle flange and the back of the hub and found the following:

Driver’s side: 2-1/4”
Passenger side: 2-3/8”

The problem could be resolved if the axles can be moved in toward the center of the car. A measurement of about 2-1/8” on both sides would allow the kit to be installed according to the Wilwood instructions without modification.

Does anyone know if there is any way to adjust the length of the axles within the axle housing?

That is very strange and the first I've heard of this. I can't remember if the caliper mounts are symmetrical but maybe you have them reversed? The whole thing comes with the kit so unless you got the wrong parts, I think you're looking at an assembly mis-step. Back up a few, have a beer and check the manual? There should be no need to adjust anything from what I experienced and I installed them twice due to the fact that I switched the calipers for easier bleeding. Good luck! Check the 33 forums as well!
