To Build or not to Build....

I think I an really starting to get the bug to build my car

Rate this Entry
I have been doing a lot of thinking about building my own car and not driving what someone else has put together.
I really want something that has a definite classic style but not a reproduction as I really appreciate and enjoy modern automotive technology:cool:
I don't have a lot of fabricaton experience but grewup around automotive shops and did quite a bit of light customizing several years ago.
Now I think with someone like Factory Five's help and some good encouragement from fellow builders it may be time to take the plunge!!

I had a similar background and found the build to be a blast. At first the build was more fun than the driving. But as I get more miles on it and some more autocrossing/light racing experience the driving is amazing. It is also fun to have folks stop traffic to take a picture of it. It is a normal occurence at stop lights for people to gawk, especially little kids who seem to really enjoy the car. Nothing to it but to do it!

You stated: "I really want something that has a definite classic style but not a reproduction as I really appreciate and enjoy modern automotive technology". Are you thinking GTM or the upcoming WRX based car? You know, you can put a lot of modern technology into a "reproduction".

What I really ment by not a reproduction was that I am not interested in making a true to period reproduction of what would typically be a restoration but rather I want to put my own spin on it with modern technology as well as possible alterations in the styling from the original car not neccesarily moving to an entirely new body. From what I have seen the Coupe and to some extent the roadster don;t lend themselves to this as well as say the '33, GTM or possibly the new car

It took me about 16 months to make the decision. I busied myself by buying the FFR build manual and tried several times to build the car in my head: impossible. I had of course never done anything like this ever before, so I had some fear and trepidation. That went away quickly once I started building (OK, the trepidation went away, but fear returned briefly from time to time). I can say now that the process of building an entire car from parts is definitely a character-building experience, with the results yielding far more than simply a completed vehicle. That said, it's clearly not for everybody.

He also says that I should put a racing stripe on it.
