Ode to an armature

I thought I'd have this armature made for my model by now, but that hasn't happened yet. I slogged across town through Sunday's big rain storm to pick up some black foamboard to use as a base for the clay. I also retrieved some of my spare clay tools from my locker at Greenwich House Pottery. A few of them need a bit of repair, but they'll do nicely.
I'm struggling with the dimensions for the armature. Get it wrong and I'll have to peel off all the clay I've carved, re-arrange the foam, and then re-apply clay. So I'm trying to get it right the first time. Every time I come up with a new set of dimensions, I think of a reason why it's wrong. I have some sketches to go off, but because I have a hard time translating my 2D drawings into 3D in my head, I'm struggling to pinpoint the places that I won't come near with the carving. If this clay weren't so darn expensive, I'd do the whole thing in solid clay but for now, I'm trying to minimize the amount of clay. My notoriously poor back-of-the-envelope math says it would be $300 to do this model in solid clay!
I've got my "real" pottery class tomorrow night, I'm going to make a few bowls and beer steins to go in an anagama kiln later this month (or early next, if the weather stays nasty!). I should be able to build the armature Wednesday or Thursday. Hopefully there will be progress to report by the end of the week.
