Fuel Cell: Cage & Mount System

Rate this Entry
We are using a standard Fuel Safe 22-gallon cell set up in the Factory Five Racing configuration (17.5"). Monty Holt at Bits 'N Pieces Motorsports in Vancouver, WA is the "go to" guy for our fuel cell and fill plate configuration. Monty is a racer from way back, and has provided outstanding support to the industry over the years. His shop was originally located in Huntington Beach, CA before moving to the Pacific Northwest. www.bits-pieces.com. (360) 859-3595.

That looks great, Karen. I finished welding in mounts for the fuel cell last evening and will post pictures shortly. I borrowed heavily from your design, but moved the mounts forward by about 3/4" to account for where I placed the rear fuel cell protection tube (inside the structure, rather than outside). If I had to do it again, I'd follow your design, which is cleaner and simpler.

I see that all of the 3/4" square tubes are removed from above the tank. I cut out the tubes that the battery box would hang from, but left the big "X" in the middle. I have a question when you have a chance: Were the "trunk floor" square tubes removed to allow removal of the fuel cell through the trunk, to avoid interference with the fill tube, or simply to cut weight? Thanks for posting all of this.

Jacob.....Thanks for the kind words....The tubing was removed for both of the purposes you suggested; To facilitate removal of the cell from the top, and to reduce overall weight....We're cutting and removing anything that has no purpose, and being very prudent about any weight we're adding.....Less is more.

We'll be looking forward to more pics from your build! Really glad you're joining us in this great adventure!
