Engine Blog: First 302 experience

My build concept was simple. I wanted to build a small block that breathed well which I don't think is typical for Ford at least in the stock offerings. So when I saw the 58 mm throttle body orifice and the small ports for the runners especially the exhaust I was pretty surprised and disappointed. So I went to the web and started researching it a little. What I found was a reference to the "Holley Systemax" EFI intake over and over again. After some time, I came to the conclusion that it was a pretty good choice to use for my build. It seemed to perform at or near the top of the heap with most of the hight performance manifolds. It works well in the 3500 to 6500 range. My only concern was would it be streetable. But since I ran a tunnel ram on one of my hot rods, I guessed this couldn't be any worse. Then a stroke of luck came along. My son found a small block that someone had pulled out of their 95 GT. They had wrecked it days after finishing the project and totaled it. So for the next few months I tried to purchase. Long story short: I got it for $300 which I would be willing to pay for the manifold. Turns out I got an early Xmas present as the build had GT40P heads, a crane cam, Ford Racing (Crane) alum roller rockers (new), and the manifold. So I planned on using the Manifold as my template to build by matching the runners for the heads to the intake which was only about 2 mm difference. I also matched the exhaust ports to the new BBK headers I got. That was a totally different story (major work). I also matched the throttle body to the manifold orifice which was 75 mm. So most of the components were coming together to produce a pretty effective "air pump". Next, I just had to wait for the crate engine to show up so I could start bolting on the go fast goodies. WEK.
