Engine Build Day 1 (and 2)

Rate this Entry
Well I was hoping to get a season or so out of my donor engine but after pulling the heads off we found valve marks on the pistons so a rebuild was inserted into the budget.
Its been a saga.

First off, it was kinda obvious that the engine wasnt the one the donor came from the factory with.
Im no code reading guru but it appears its from the truck line..oh well, a 302 block is a 302 block.
On the bright side, it was still the stock cylinder bore.

I took the block and heads into my local machine shop for an overhaul.
The block checked out fine, but they found cracks in the gt-40p heads I got of craigslist.
I was leaving town and got lucky and found another set of heads for $125 that I could drop off before my flight and those checked out fine.

Anyways, they bored it .030 over and overhauled the heads.
Its been a long time since I rebuilt an engine and it has been a lot of fun...although expensive.

Note in the above picture that the broken ear for the bell housing bolt has been fixed.

I guess we didnt get a picture of the cam going in. Its a FMS E303.

Note the ghetto degree wheel made from a printout glued to a circle of aluminum :-)

The old timing chain cover was cracked so thats new...more money...will it ever end?

The intake manifold is just sitting there for looks. It needs a little work and paint. Valve covers are also just on there for the picture.

The official specs are 306 ci w/ gt-40p heads and E 303 cam.
I have a C&L 73mm MAF and 65 mm TB from an explorer.

Should be a fun motor.
