When test driving, I have been paying attention to the basics so it wasn't 'til lately I noticed my volt meter appears to be just left of 12 volts. So I became concerned that I have wired the alternator wrong. I took it off the car and had it checked at a shop and it is checks out fine. So now I am starting over with the wiring. I have a diagram of the wiring as it is on a 95 mustang (see diagram). So the large red wire is running to the battery. That should be correct. I am running the yellow to that same terminal (tells the alt when and when not to charge). The white wire goes into the small connector and back into the alternator. The only wire I am not sure about is the green which is supposed to run to the ignition switch according to the diagram but which one (switched source)? Is it the "I" terminal? If not which one? I thought the green wire was optional for an indicator light but now I think it is necessary. Diagram says, "on when the car is on". Thank you, WEK.

Yes that wire should be connected to the indicator light, or a resistor. It essentially tells the alternator to turn on.

Hi rich grsc,

I thought my request had gotten buried. I saw another diagram that described exactly what you mentioned above but I don't have that circuitry in place. What I did was run the yellow wire to a brown in the AW harness according to the chassis schematic. A friend's alternator (just like mine) had the yellow to the bat post of the alternator. For some reason he had hooked his up the wrong way too. Maybe he saw the same original schematic I did. So when I started researching more wiring schematics, I found this one. I was hoping someone else was able to run the right wire straight to the ignition switch with success. Since I have the brown wire running from the ignition to the area of the "exciter" green wire, that's a simple hookup. My only problem is which post. I have the switch out and will begin taking the wires off the back. I do have a spare ignition switch to examine without having to stand on my head to see the terminals. I also have a starter button I got from Finish Line that I have to install. I found a good schematic for that (three possible hookups). Not real clear on the starter switch circuitry/terminal wire placement so not in my comfort zone at all. Thank you, WEK.
