So as I am contemplating the purchase of an 818, I ran across this possible donor:

Per the current owner:

2002 WRX Wagon

The latest update included a trip to AWDTuning in TX to remap the stock ECU. They did a great job getting the car set up for 91 and e85 producing about 320whp and 370wtq on the e85. Keith also set up launch control on the e85 tune. Unfortunately I have never gotten to drive with the e85 tune. We set it to 91 for my drive home, and I headed out. The car did great all the way back home, but the next day I have a cam gear shatter at low RPM (in my sister's neighborhood at about 15-20mph). We replaced the gear and compression looked good, but looks can be deceiving. Car runs and drives but is rough. I believe it did get at least one valve so I have not been driving the car at all. Car can be driven onto a trailer.

This is the perfect project for someone who has the time/money to pull the motor and swap the valves (all stock currently so would be a good excuse to upgrade).

Would this make a good donor for an 818?

Thanks!

Sounds like a lot of nice parts but how much money is the most important question. Assume the motor is a total loss worst case and ask yourself if it's still worth it. If it ate a valve you'll probably need new turbo as well.

Check on the availability of those pistons in case they need replacing and also see if you can find out who built the engine.

I personally love teh EJ22 block and it sounds like they've stroked it into an 2.35Liter block.

i'd say if you were wanting a really good engine, and weren't afraid to do some engine work to get it. that's a good way (depending on price)
